I go by two online handles.
The first "dglas" is a shortened vesion of my middle name Douglas. At first I was using an apostrophe, but later I dropped it. Other than that, the only thing that might make this handle remotely interesting is that D'glas McGregor was one of my favourite science fiction characters while growing up. He's a hedonist in James Gunn's The Joymakers. I first encounered the name in a compilation, The End of the Dreams. Being a very young person at the time, I associated with the character more because his name was close to mine: Gregory Douglas Teed. it didn't hurt that I loved the story. Still do. (I am no relation to the hollow earther Cyrus Teed! - or maybe it's some kind of kharmic debt).
"Raeat" was a name I created for a role-playing character 25 or so years ago. I became attached to the name due to long use. Hell, you can even get used to a word like Heechee (F. Pohl, Gateway) if you say it often enough. I would like to point out that raeat has absolutely nothing to do with Air India Bombers (Rayat) although the pronounciation is the same. It was mine first, dammit!
I chose dglas for this forum and other skeptical forums because that is what I went by on Taner Edis's old skeptic-L list back when the internet was the domain of the universities. On gaming forums I use raeat.

I chose Ghost_Skeptic because I live in Ghost Lake Village in the Province of Alberta in Canada. Ghost Lake is the reservoir behind the Ghost Dam at the confluence of the Ghost and Bow Rivers. There are various stories of how the Ghost River got it's name. One is that is named after the ghost Blackfoot Warrior and his Stoney (Nakoda Sioux) Maiden, who were killed fleeing her tribe's warriors. Another is that the Ghost of Blackfoot warrior was seen picking up the skulls of his fallen comrades after a battle with the Cree.

I'm Chippewa because I can legally live on the Turtle Mountain reservation in North Dakota if I wanted too, though I'm actually part Chippewa (or Ojibwa) and part French in ancestry. My late father was mostly Chippewa and looked much more Indian than I do. I could possibly pass for a Caucasian on the outside, though I feel and act very Indian on the inside. I'm an artist and composer. My family has an interesting history which could be told if we ever start a family history thread. |

My username is in fact my first name. In all my forum memberships, it will either by Aerik, or related to my email, onlyAerik@gmail.com . I guess that's kind of a boring story. The etymology of my name is a combination of the Nordic "Erik," and "aerie." Erik is associated with strength. Aerie has latin-to-french roots, whose meaning has meandered from a high-perched nest (oft an eagle's), or any kind of stronghold up high (like a castle, s'pose). My mom thinks the amalgum creates "strong as an eagle protecting his nest," but there is too much extra nuance in that interpretation. I opine that it really creates something like, "Strong from on-high." If we are going to include nuances something Norse, we can only do them justice by making at least a vague reference to Valhallah. :)

Well, leoofno is a boring combination of my first name and the city that dominates the area I live in (and in which I work): Leo of New Orleans. No caps because, like filthy, I'm lazy. And I work a lot in UNIX which is case insensitive, so it didn't occur to me. I use the name elsewhere on the web because its never already taken.
Had I known that I would someday have to explain my username, I would have tried to be a bit more clever.
