Here in Kansas, something strange is happening. Prices for a gallon of gas was 1.49 yesterday. My brother passed a station today, with a block long line, selling it for 2.50. Rumors were that the closer to KC you got it went WAY up, as much as 8 bucks a gallon. (sheesh) I also heard this on the news (the anchor's comment was something to the effect as "price gouging for gas in Kansas of all places")
I was just wondering what it's like in you guy's part of the country and if we are just very paranoid about having gas in Kansas or just plain stupid :)
BTW my car is on empty, i'll be relying on my sister-in-law to get around (who filled up yesterday) to get around until things calm down.

In Oregon the price at the pump has gone from ~$1.51 to $1.80 in the last 12 hours. Air traffic has been shut down, of course, and you know how much gasoline is shipped via air...grrr. Unless refineries were actually shut down due to fear of terrorist attacks I can't see why the price has jumped.

There are reports of gas prices soaring in a number of different states. Here in California gasoline wholesalers are reported to have raised prices by 0.20/gal.
My guess is that it's partly opportunism- figuring that today's trauma will trigger a run on gas stations which can be cashed in on, and partly anticipation of future supply problems, which doesn't seem totally irrational to me.

I'll repeat my comment from the other thread. quote: Morally, while thousands are suffering and dying, while millions are mourning, while millions more are confused and panicking, to use this situation for windfall profit taking is sickening. Would they feel the need to grab an extra few bucks if it were their families suffering?

You should have seen the store where I work last night. Remember, this is a little mom and pop operation. Ed and I gassed up on our way out to dinner. Kathleen, my co-worker looked a little busy, but it was a nice evening so a lot of people were out. After dinner, we decided to stop at the bar for a few brewskis. I happened to look out the door and noticed a long line at the pumps. I told Ed I was going to run next door and give Kat a hand. What a fiasco! People were in an actual panic. They were filling any container that could reasonably be used to store gasoline. After a while Ed wondered what happened to me and wandered over to look. Kat and I put him to work too. We put Ed out there directing traffic because he's great when people start getting bitchy. We completely sold out of gas by 2030. I called the store owner this morning to see what time he wants me to come in, and also see if he had a petrol delivery. I asked what he's going to sell the gas for. Same as yesterday. He's not raised his prices one cent, as his distributer is not charging him any more. He says the big jumps have been with the independent stations, and the law needs to catch up with them. Will people believe there's no reason for panic? I doubt it. Ed doesn't know it yet, but he's probably going to be an unpaid worker again tonight. Lisa

This seems to be in the US only. Where I live, in Ontario, gas was 70.3 per litre last night and is down to 69.6 this morning.

quote: … in Ontario, gas was 70.3 per litre…
Let's see now that would be Canadian money and metric volume, there must be an easier method.
Let's compare the price of gas to the price of eggs, it's a little less than two dozen eggs per gallon. I would say 23 eggs per gallon in Louisiana.
A tank full of gas ~14 gal. = 322 eggs to fill up my truck.
So, Ontario how many eggs does it take to fill up your car? |

I'm in Madison, Wisconsin...Rumors were going around last night about gas prices...You had to wait in line a good half hour to get gas...It was rediculous...Rumors were it would go up a few bucks...Most places it only went up 10 cents or so...But there are a few places that went way up, seems to be people trying to take advantage...But all0in-all, not too much of a change here...

Everything here today was normal. No lines or anything. Gas went up $.10.

Things are back to normal in KC. Some stations ran out of gas last night, but had deliveries.
Fear does strange things to people.

Here in Alabama, we don't get much snow. It's a running joke here that every winter, when the meteorologists predict snow, there is a run on milk and bread. I'm talking completely bare shelves in a matter of hours. (The price never goes up, however).
Now keep in mind that when it does snow here, the city will shut down, as we don't invest in snow plows and salt trucks. But what's funny is that we're never shut down more than a day or two. Yet people still wipe out the milk and bread, like they were afraid of being trapped for weeks!
I once say a guy with an entire shopping cart filled with potatoes. And another with a cart full of orange juice.
Fear does indeed do strange things to people!

Tonight was nice and quiet. As a matter of fact, gas dropped about 2 cents per gallon. My prediction that people would still be in a panic was wrong. My prediction that this would be like Y2K was dead on. Remember that? When all of our computers imploded, the electricity went, and we had no running water? Neither do I. Lisa

I'm actually kind of embarrased that Kansas City seemed to be the place where the most price gouging and panicking took place. Because of the weather here, being without power is nothing new, and most people have supplies on hand for at least a couple of days for emergencies as a matter of fact. We are usually a calm and level headed bunch. You have to be when you live in tornado alley.
My guess is one moronic station owner, for whatever reason, hiked prices to ludicrous level and precepitated the panic he was trying to avoid and caused a domino effect. When the normal gas deliveries were made last night, and everybody woke up with there still being gas, rationallity returned.
There's been talk of legal action, and if they did it to make a fast buck, they should be nailed to the wall. The problem is, they might have panicked too, and that certainly isn't against the law, just unfortunate.
