Faked antiquies are very common and too seldom caught. The archeoraptor piece-together and Piltdown fraud come to mind. This sort of thing also shows up in Aztec, Inca, and Maya artifacts, not to mention Egyptian.
It was interesting to note that the owner of the 'James' ossuary was busted as a part of a ring.

Update: 4 including ossuary owner charged on wednesday. At least the Jews really like accuracy in holy items, they really do not like poeple who fake holy relics.
