The anti-arabic rhetoric I've been hearing lately is, although perhaps understandable, is very upsetting to me.

Here is a very good short little article about what the Koran actually says about suicide and martyrdom and killing of innocents.

I agree it is very upsetting, but, no, it is not understandable, nor is it to be tolerated.

I am too. I guess people don't realize that it's exactly this type of reaction that the terrorists were trying to provoke.

Not only that, Greg, but it seems to me that it is this type of attitude that has led to terrorist acts/attacks in the first place.

This is what is unfathomable to me throughout all this...how is it possible for an individual to hate/condemn an entire society?

I've never understood any type of prejudice.

Sadly, Z, it's very EASY when that society is a faceless entity and you've never known anyone who belonged to it.

The a-hole aussie I mentioned over on BABB, is, normally a rational guy, talks to americans every day online! But then turns around and spouts hateful hateful anti-american rhetoric.
That is much harder to understand. Saying you hate the group, the group is so bad, but you're ok, and you're ok, and you're ok, ok, so there isn't a single american here that I really don't like. But that can't be indicative of the entire population, can it?

*sigh*sigh*sigh*

is it just me, or do people who actually get out to see the rest of the world tend to lose this kind of attitude quickly? Maybe young Colin should become an aid worker to teach him some sympathy.

Good judgement comes from experience: experience comes from bad judgement.

That old saying about the Devil quoting Scripture to his own ends seems like a pretty shrewd observation on human nature.

I would really like to see Bush come out and say, clearly an unambiguously, that and attack on Americans is an attack on ALL Americans, including Arab-Americans. It might not stop it all, but it would help. Or are we just going to round Arab-Americans up into camps as with Japanese-Americans in WWII.

I cannot help but wonder, is it easier to wage war against another nation if you dehumanize their people and learn to hate them as a faceless group? Is this not a very common phenomena in warfare? Is it somehow psychologically facilitative to the ends of warfare?

If so, have Americans thus lost their taste for war? Or can war be waged not out of hatred, but out of duty?

I think that one can teach hate easily but tolerance is much harder. During WWII, the was significant propaganda aimed at dehumanizing the Nazis and Japanese. My father fought in the Pacific and believed all of it. After the war, he was in Japan and learned to respect the Japanese people. I wonder if his hate would have gone to the grave with him had he not been stationed in Japan.

Greg.

"Tolerance" is so important that the general population is being lied to to promote it.

Pablo Guzman of WCBS news (channel 2 in NYC) reported and showed tape of Palestinians dancing in the streets of Jersey City on Tuesday. That story was pulled and an anouncement made that it was in error. However the Arab Channel on Brooklyn Queens Cable (Time/Warner) has been showing their own tapes of this outrage that they made in Jersey City. What they are saying is anybodies guess-there are no subtitles.

There was massive looting and open gun fire in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. The cops now have this under control. No news of this was broadcast-I got it from a cop on the scene.

However there seems to be no problem in reporting the "intolerance" of White Americans.
I suppose that it's a war now and we have to except that the media will not be able to present balanced views for quite some time. If this selective information promotes the civil peace then so be it.
