"When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." Thomas Jefferson

Mark 10:27 (NKJV) 27But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.”

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms ... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants, they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."

"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not."

Thomas Jefferson

From the moment I picked up your book until I laid it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Some day I intend reading it.

My favorite has always been Benjamin Franklin's:

quote:
I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth-that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, it is probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured in the Sacred Writings, that ‘except the Lord build the House, they labour in vain that build it.' I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without His concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel

"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." - Ben Franklin

Seriously, Doomar, do you have a point to make with these quote threads?

Seems you did with the other one, but you're not polite enough to finish what you started.

Well, even if they are just quote threads, I don't mind them. I am on the look out for any good quote I can find.

"War solves all man's problems.
No man, no problem" - Stalan

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Sorry about that, Dave. I do have a hard time responding to multiple answers. It's tedious sometimes and discouraging. I'm better with single points, so I will try to only address single points myself in the future.

My point with this thread is to note beliefs of early Americans. It is very interesting to me to read some of their writings and understand their viewpoints and try to learn from them what I can.

I have already learned a lot more about Tom Paine and Ben Franklin and Tom Jefferson.

I don't care; it's fun. And the only acceptable form of quote-mining.

There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened. -- Douglas Adams
