Not one damn' dime!
quote: Here is a protest idea for the upcoming inaugaration being circulated via email:
Not One Damn Dime Day - Jan 20, 2005: Since our religious leaders will not speak out against the war in Iraq, since our political leaders don't have the moral courage to oppose it, since Bush is wasting 40 MILLION dollars on his inauguration party…while the soldiers have inadequate armor and too few of them to create or maintain peace in Iraq… Inauguration Day, Thursday, January 20th, 2005 is “Not One Damn Dime Day” in America. On “Not One Damn Dime Day” those who oppose what is happening in our name in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of all forms of consumer spending.

The inaguration shouldn't happen in the first place, but as gestures go, this would be one everyone can support. |

Thanks for the link, filthy. My sister-in-law told me about "Buy Nothing, Wear Something" Day. The idea is the same, but in addition to not spending, participants were something anti-war or anti-Bush.

So, if you read these forums you all know how I feel about Bush and the war. But I have to wonder what good a non-targeted boycott will do? An effective boycott usually lasts a while and is targeted at those companies and institutions that are part the problem. Targeting Mom and Pop operations, some of those owned by people who also hate Bush, does not make a whole lot of sense to me. Plus, these one day boycotts never work. They might make the evening news, but in this case probably not. It might make a few people feel better thinking that they have “sent a message” but in the total scheme of things all the boycott will do is hurt small retailers who have nothing to do with the war or Bush. They are just trying to make a living… |

I took this directly from the site:
quote: On January 20th, people across the country will join together to speak in one voice. By staying home from work, by not buying products from chain stores, by turning off their cable TV, by not buying (or using) gasoline or other oil-based products, by not making long-distance phone calls - in an infinite number of ways, Americans will send George Bush a message he sorely needs to hear. America expects accountability, transparency, humanity and justice from an administration which has, up to now, provided little in any of these areas.(Emphasis mine)
We're stuck with four more years. I know that. I have no desire to harm some hard-working small business owner. I know a one-day boycott won't make any real difference. It will, however, make me feel better, if only for a moment.
