Neat story, Argon atmospheres are so handy in chemical processes.

"...things I have neither seen nor experienced nor heard tell of from anybody else; things, what is more, that do not in fact exist and could not ever exist at all. So my readers must not believe a word I say." -Lucian on his book True History

"...They accept such things on faith alone, without any evidence. So if a fraudulent and cunning person who knows how to take advantage of a situation comes among them, he can make himself rich in a short time." -Lucian critical of early Christians c.166 AD From his book, De Morte Peregrini

So perhaps the Devil just used acid and argon to make petrified trees a few thousand years ago just to trick us! Oh, that deceiver!

You know it's coming.

I read the headline and said, oh boy, I know what this is going to do to make creationists happy campers.

Then I read the article. You'd have to not read the article if you want to be a happy creationist camper. I suspect that will be about 80% with an error rate of + or - 20 %.

The process was very complex to get your petrified wood and certainly wouldn't just happen all over the world where petrified wood is found. Also, they got a specific silica mineral deposit replacing the wood. Petrified wood comes in more than one mineral if I am not mistaken, depending on what was around the wood. I would think one can even get opalized wood. I know you can get opalized fossils.

Let alone it was cooked at 1,400 degrees.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

This was all wasted effort, then?

The Devonian

417 to 354 Million Years Ago

The Rhynie Chert in Scotland is a Devonian age deposit containing fossils of both Zosterophyllophytes and Trimerophytes, the two major lines of vascular plants. This indicates that prior to the start of the Devonian, the first major radiations of the plants had already happened. The oldest known vascular plants in the Northern Hemisphere are Devonian.

The vegetation of the early Devonian consisted primarily of small plants, the tallest being only a meter tall. By the end of the Devonian, ferns, horsetails and seed plants had also appeared, producing the first trees and the first forests. Archaeopteris, shown below left, is one of these first trees.

When God finds out that somebody is making stone trees, is he ever going to be pissed! All that work, hundreds of millions of years of carefully crafting stone trees, shot in the ass by some idiot, nosyparker researchers futzing around in places that are none of their concern, when they ought to be in church. Why make more? in the beginning, God knew there'd be a demand for stone trees to try and enhance untentable arguments, so he made enough for everybody who might need some. And now, it's all down the tubes.

Guess we'd better get started on that ark....
