And it is a philosophy, based upon one thing for which we will not ever have empirical evidence: that there exists an objective reality.

If we don't accept the evidence of our 5 senses as evidence of an independent objective reality, then you end with the only possible conclusion being a solipsistic reality.

I accept the evidence provided by my five senses as strong and overwhelming evidence for objective reality.

The actions and behavior of all rational people are predicated upon the idea that objective reality really exists.

Yeah, that's why I specifically mentioned solipsism.

Right, for all practical purposes. It seems to me that Ricky isn't satisfied with practicality. He's also considering the [ahem] possibility that what we think we know about our objective reality is wrong (in other words, that there is an objective reality, but we don't actually have a firm grasp on it, Matrix-style). But I'm hoping he'll step in and let me know whether I'm on the right track, as far as he's concerned.

Absolutely. And even more so, since most people would insist that objective reality is precisely that which they can see, hear, touch, taste and smell, even though you can't get a good impression of the speed of light, or electrons or the average bacteria with just the five senses. This is why it's kind of funny when creationists rail against the evils of materialism. Almost all of them are practicing materialists.

All I am trying to say is that we must acknowlege the chance that what we see isn't what we get, nothing more.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.
- Isaac Asimov
