No both is great! Just seems that 90% plus of anybody who does any of this type is doing seti when many groups need help too. |
"...things I have neither seen nor experienced nor heard tell of from anybody else; things, what is more, that do not in fact exist and could not ever exist at all. So my readers must not believe a word I say." -Lucian on his book True History
"...They accept such things on faith alone, without any evidence. So if a fraudulent and cunning person who knows how to take advantage of a situation comes among them, he can make himself rich in a short time." -Lucian critical of early Christians c.166 AD From his book, De Morte Peregrini |

Indeed, but one of the problems I saw when compiling my list was that not everyone is dealing with "ease of use" issues nearly as well as the SETI crowd.
I re-downloaded, installed and set up the SETI client in under ten minutes just the other day (new computer), and after years of use I know I am free to ignore it completely. Compare that with at least one project which tells you to download the source code, compile it, and then start it running. Or to a project which makes you check it to see if it's done with its current chunk of work, and if it is, you need to export the results to a text file and email them to someone (this is the reason I didn't include Evolution@Home). Many people aren't going to put up with that sort of 'work', and the SETI group has made things about as easy as they can be.
Also, like with charity groups, there will always be those which need help more than others. It is inappropriate (and in some cases rude) to imply that a person's charitable giving doesn't meet your standards. Better people give to someone - anyone - than to not give at all for fear of giving to the "wrong" group (unless, of course, the reasons for such a judgement call are clearly based on, say, criminal acts). |

You can set it to activate only when the screensaver activates.
Most days I just leave my machine running when I'm home and not using it. I (enter super-geek mode now) have three PC's set up on my desk, three monitors, keyboards, mice, etc... I run the SETI program on one and the Folding on another, and use the main (newest) one for surfing and stuff.
The idea behind three PC's is playing online games... can run multiple instances of client software for mmorpgs that way, and thus play more than one character at a time.

Wish I had money to have more than one. Oh well. I wouldn't mind compiling (as long as it isn't something mindboggingly confusing to follow), but I'd most likely forget to actually send results and stuff like that. |

Cool. I downloaded. I'm running.
Okay, for those helping Folding@Home, the SFN team number is 42544, and here's the TeamPage. Nothing there now, but I haven't even completed one step of one work unit yet. |

Siberia, how's your SETI@Home stuff working for you?
Dude, I just finished my first Folding workunit. Obviously, I need to give it a slightly higher priority than it had. |

Just fine. I don't leave the computer on for long periods of time, though, and when it's on I'm most likely using it... but it's running smoothly. |

They take a long time to complete, even if you give it max priority.

There is also another distributed computing project called Darwin@home (www.darwinathome.org). It seems to have a more general approach to evolution than evoultion@home does. |

Just wanted to bump this up. The SFN folding@home team could use some more people. Currently just Dave_W and I.
So, if anyone is looking to donate some computing time to a worthwhile project... sign up!

How long after joining does it take for one to show up on the team page? I've got maybe 2% of the "molecule" folded. Maybe you don't show up until you've finished one? |

I dunno. If it doesn't show after you finish one... check the team number you entered.

I don't know what's going on; here's what I've got so far:
EDIT: according to their website, it may take a couple of days, I guess for one "work unit" to be done...
It says: Work Unit progress 52/25000, team number is 42544. |
