"...things I have neither seen nor experienced nor heard tell of from anybody else; things, what is more, that do not in fact exist and could not ever exist at all. So my readers must not believe a word I say." -Lucian on his book True History
"...They accept such things on faith alone, without any evidence. So if a fraudulent and cunning person who knows how to take advantage of a situation comes among them, he can make himself rich in a short time." -Lucian critical of early Christians c.166 AD From his book, De Morte Peregrini |

That's very interesting. I knew that aborial ants often fell and recovered if a breeze didn't blow them too far away, but I've never heard of actual gliding.
Many non-gliding, aborial animals use falling as a defense. I've seen grey squirrels do it from quite a heigth, and the house geckos in Puerto Rico would sometimes, in the middle of the night of course, drop from the ceiling and hit the floor with a horrid splat, and scuttle off unhurt. And, I suspect, do it again as soon as we were almost back to sleep out of pure spite.
They spread out and take the impact over their entire body. It's pretty remarkable to observe.
