If any of your were watching CNN last night, you probably saw a bit of debate about American Airlines. Seems that before the dust had settled, AA was lobbying Congress to protect them from lawsuits. Now, I can see their point--they don't want to take the heat for poor security that's system-wide. But this has got to be the most outrageous example of bad timing I've ever seen. Lisa

The bottom line is that airport security was lax because tighter security was just too expensive to impliment. I don't think it seems all that expensive now. More like ridiculously cheap now that we see the cost of not having tighter airpost security. Hands up everyone that could put up with an extra couple bucks on their airline ticket.

*Hand now up*
...and this leads to the obvious topic of discussion: how accountable should we hold the airlines for this? What about the FAA, are they more or less accountable than the airlines?
I really have no idea. |

Although I agree that the timing sucks, I can't really blame them. Airport security is not the (direct) responsibility of the airlines, but the vultures are already circling the scene, looking for the deepest pockets to feed on.
I would wager that all airliners designed from now on will have separate access for the flight crew, with a solid bulkhead between the flightdeck and the passenger compartment. The flightdeck will be self-contained with its own restroom and food prep area (flight crews will probably hand carry their own food onboard).
The question is: Will it be possible to retrofit existing planes?

Modern airliners are nothing more than long tubes with wings and engines. Everthing is designed to slide in and out. The planes can be reconfigured rather easily. I imagine the doors and bulkheads of the flight deck will be some mix of steel and reinforced kevlar.
Flight crew procedures will certainly change. If a rukus starts in the passenger compartment, the pilots will probably dive for the nearest airport, while the flight attendants will be on their own. I feel sorry for an "air rage" passenger staring down the barrel of an air marshall's pistol.
It may be interesting to note that in the entire history of El Al (Israel) Airlines, no jet liner has ever been hijacked. Every flight carries armed air marshalls and they will shoot to kill anyone who attempts a takeover. (and everyone knows it)

That's good and all, but knowing Americans(pre-WTC destruction), I have a feeling that more than one person is gonna scream that their rights have been taken away and that the sky marshall hurt them "emotionally". Bull.

A simple common airline fix I've heard is to install double ‘five-minute' doors, take a few first class seats out, so that one will be locked from the inside at all times. This would allow the flight crew, one at a time, to visit the passengers and bathroom. Perhaps in the cockpit have a lock box with a pistol in it, between the pilot and copilot.
This means that the stewardesses and passengers will be on their own. If you assist in restraining someone at the request of a stewardess what guarantee do you have that they won't sue you, at the very least keep subpoenaing you until you run out of money. Just make sure that the stewardess places the passenger under arrest before you act. Hummm…might be better off if you just kill the drunken bastard… |
