mocking stupid beliefs is funny and should be a rich vein of comedy, but its hard to do it without being killed or shunned. Which comedians have managed to pull it off successfully?
first one that comes to mind is Ricky Gervais in his stand up show 'Animals' he spends about 15 minutes talking about genesis/evolution, which is definitely the best part of the show.
no other ones really stand out, Chris Rock's opinions on eating pork are quite amusinng, not outright mocking though.

Can't think of any comics off hand, except that guy who is on PBS occasionally -- who's name I can't bring forth, and mildly; Garrison Keiler, but singers have long been the heretics of officialdom.
Bush in particular and Republicans in general have given them a lifetime of material in just a few, short years.

George Carlin, Monty Python, David Cross, Penn and Teller (loosely comedians) and really, many others I think. |

As one of my vocations I am a professional magician, so I've followed Penn and Teller for much of their career. They are some of the better entertainers that fall in the category. Many magicians have made a study of the art of deception, and consequently many are pretty shrewd at spotting deceit. Penn and Teller seem to be well armed with some of those skills as well as a healthy cynicism, a good sense of humor, and a thorough understanding of what it takes to entertain.

Of course!
I am not a big fan of the toob (which is why I can't think of many comedians), but on the occasions that I caught his shows, I found him to be one of the best.

My memory serves me vague images of a Brittish comedian Dave Ellen. Chatholics and the pope was his favourite targets. |

That's Dave Allen. His show was on PBS here in the USA for a while in the late '80s. As I recall, he did like to skewer hypocrisy, particularly of the religio-sexual kind.
He died just last month. Here's a bio: http://www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/838629/ |

I think these sites are great parodies.

Ah, forget it. They're not parodies. But still, if we have christians like these, who needs comedians. |
