Wow an actually good piece from MSNBC trying to compare Einstein/Relativity with Darwin/Evolution. Even details what a scientific theory is and how useful it is. Its an interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of New York's Hayden Planetarium and co-author of the book "Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution,"

Nicely done and well written.

Thanks, bloody!

Wow! That is one of the best pieces on this subject I have read to date.
quote:
If you're coming in saying that there was Adam and Eve, you're not going to get past the front door. Because they can't use your knowledge base to invent the next vaccine, the next medicine, the next cure for cancer. That knowledge base does not track into discoveries we know are awaiting us in the halls of biotech firms.
That's the argument I've been trying to convey.

And his description of how the terms law and theory are used put it in such better perspective than I had been exposed to before. Now I see why law of gravity and theory of gravity cannot just be 'defined' differently. They aren't different. It isn't as simple as the law is the math and theory is the concept though I'm sure many folks would argue with me ad nauseum about 'law' vs. 'theory'. Tyson's historical context of the terms makes more sense to me as a non physicist.

Medicine is the work of the devil. I never thought of that as being as broad as the evolution vs creation phenomenon but perhaps it was a really big deal to some at the time. Pat Robertson certainly went on about HIV being God's punishment. I suspect he still believes it. The Catholics should take note that their claim birth control is against God's will is in the same vein as keeping one alive with medicine. Seems like if it benefits you, then forget the God's will argument. If it affects someone else then sticking to an existing belief is easier to support.
