Are we really governed by such a bunch of pussies?

WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. Capitol and White House were briefly evacuated Wednesday after a small plane entered restricted airspace over the city. Several other government buildings, including the Treasury Department and the U.S. Supreme Court, ordered people to safer locations.

President Bush was away from the White House exercising on his bicycle. Congressional leaders were moved from the Capitol.

A small Cessna aircraft breached the security zone over Washington, several law enforcement officials said, prompting alerts across the city.

The plane was approached by a fighter aircraft and veered away, according to a Federal Aviation Administration official speaking on condition of anonymity.

Armed security officers raced through the Capitol shouting for people to leave. "This is not a drill," guards shouted as they moved people away from the building.

Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., was on the Senate floor when police told him they needed to evacuate. "They said get out of here, so I ran. There's no joking about this kind of stuff," Shelby said.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert was on the House floor talking to members when the evacuation siren went off. He left quickly with his security detail.

Two large black armored SUVs often used by House and Senate leaders sped away from the Capitol as a military jet flow overhead.

I could only imagine what it would be like to be a pilot and have a fighter jet coming at you. Would make a pretty good story.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

I guess that means that they can just go fuck themselves.

Well, that would be fine if only they didn't somehow manage to do us at the same time.

I, frankly, am just getting sick of the way the news covers these fire drills. It's laughable. A private plane crossed the invisible line. You'd think they had had a real alarm and even then the coverage would have been absurd. Fortunately I had the Air America Al Frankin show on and the TV muted. Much funnier, interesting and informative.

In the words of Bill Cosby, "first you say it, then you do it." The video from the helicopter of one of these guys in cuffs on the runway wasn't clear enough to see if he'd soiled his pants.

Well now......

It would appear that Drudge used a photo from 2004 in their report on this incident. The pic demonstrates panic in the streets where it is likely that none such existed.

Thus, we have a prime example of the decline of journalistic integrety in the US. I have read that on a free press scale, we rank at about 24th in the world.

Yeah, I know. Drudge ain't no kind of a journalist. But his report is read by a hell of a lot of people. Therefore, warrented or not, like it or not, the clown has influence.

More and more, I wonder if this whole deal wasn't another setup, another distraction.

It's so easily fixed by a footnote saying "Archived photo" and the problem is at least partly solved. The integrity of media is in decline in Sweden too, but it's not even half as bad as in the US...

The two largest evening papers in Sweden went from Newspaper status to tabloid integrity the last 10-15 years, and they represent the bulk of that segment.

I heard a portion of an interview on NPR (I missed the part where the guest was identified, but his field was security) where it was stated that sending everyone into the streets was the WORST thing to do. Such a small plane could only do real damage by dispersing a poisonous gas or biological weapon of some sort. In that case the last thing we want is for everyone to be running around OUTSIDE.

I'd agree with funnier. Franken is like (not as bad as, but like) Limbaugh in his "journalistic" integrity.

They exist to spin, and they always spin in favor of their party. Always at the expense of reality.

I hate to admit it, but I think you're right -- damn! I just swallered m' snuff!

The biggest difference is that, while both are primarily entertainers, Franken doesn't have to tell as many outright lies.

Heh, just a thought: Limbaugh and Hovind make a good pair. I'm sure that both would be delighted to know that.

No, you are wrong. Frankin backs up his spin with facts. His attacks on Limbaugh are a good example. Every Friday Frankin has an old friend of his who is a self proclaimed dittohead on the program. Frankin plays some quote from Limbaugh and presents the refuting facts. The dittohead friend reluctantly admits Limbaugh is wrong every Friday.

Tell me some falsehood you heard on the Al Frankin show. Let's look into this.

BTW, there has been plenty BS on some of the other programs on Air America. I especially hate the Mike Malloy Show. But Frankin is not a BSer.
