If even half of this story about the US Air Force Academy is true, it is deeply disturbing:

quote:

Academy chaplains Major Warren "Chappy" Watties instructed cadets who attended his protestant worship service to return to their tents and proselytize to cadets who hadn't attended; failure to accept this proselytizing would cause cadets to "burn in the fires of hell."

Cadets who did not attend a chapel service after dinner were forced to march in a "Heathen Flight" back to their dorms.

Head-football-coach Fisher DeBerry informed his team he expected to see them in church on Easter. He also hung a banner in the locker room proclaiming "I am a Christian first and last * * * I am a member of Team Jesus Christ"

Commander of Cadets General Johnny Weida emailed cadets endorsing National Prayer Week and saying "[a]sk the Lord to give us the wisdom to discover the right, the courage to choose it, and the strength to make it endure." In an official "Commander's Guidance" document, General Weida instructed cadets that they "are accountable first to your God."

I find it outrageous that an arm of the federal government, supported entirely by humongous truckloads of tax dollars, can get away with this crap. I find it frightening that assholes like this are training people to fly around in nuclear armed bombers. I thought they were there to protect our freedom and constitution, not to abuse their freedom and blatantly violate the constitution.

So if one of those cadets chose conscientious objector status over supporting the Iraq War because of some Bible verse like, "turn the other cheek", I wonder how that would be interpreted?

At least he was asking for wisdom. The first step, after all, is admitting you have a problem.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Geez, I posted about this in the Theology Web forums...the reaction I got from one of the guys there is beyond belief! He accused me of being "hysterical" and "no one was being pressured" in any way for xianity!

Here's the post, you be the judge. God, I didn't think I'd see this kind of reaction outside of Rapture Ready (it's why I didn't post this there!)

This is my reply.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

Great.... the idea of a religious fundamentalist, regardless of their flavor, driving a stealth bomber is not comforting.
