According to this article, if Congress were to pass the bill that they've talking about, churches would be able to tell people who to vote for, and still not loose their tax-exampt status.

quote:
Right now, churches can speak out on issues and not risk their tax-exempt status. But if boosters of one bill succeed, sermons could change. Instead of talking about current events and issues and how they relate to religion, the pastor could tell you who to vote for.

quote:
"Let me just say this right now. If you vote for John Kerry this year, you need to repent or resign," The Rev. Chan Chandler told his congregation in October 2004.

That recording cost the North Carolina pastor his job. But this bill would change that. The bill's sponsor, Sen. Sam Brownback, wants to let churches and pastor endorse candidates.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

So far as I know, no church to date has lost its IRS status due to politicking. Chandler may have lost his job, but his church will keep going strong, no doubt.

Oh, for a little more on Johnston, see "Creationist Fears, Creationist Behaviors" over on Panda's Thumb.
