So, after seeing a bit about our dimensioning freedom of the press in America due largely to a media controlled by a few right leaning corporate owners of most media outlets, I thought I would check our ratings when compared with other countries.
As a country that constantly boasts a free press, these results, while not necessarily surprising, are worth noting.
quote: Reporters Without Borders: Special situation of the United States and Israel The ranking distinguishes behaviour at home and abroad in the cases of the United States and Israel. They are ranked in 31st and 44th positions respectively as regards respect for freedom of expression on their own territory, but they fall to the 135th and 146th positions as regards behaviour beyond their borders.
quote: Freedom House: While the United States remained one of the strongest performers in the survey, its numerical score declined due to a number of legal cases in which prosecutors sought to compel journalists to reveal sources or turn over notes or other material they had gathered in the course of investigations. Additionally, doubts concerning official influence over media content emerged with the disclosures that several political commentators received grants from federal agencies, and that the Bush administration had significantly increased the practice of distributing government-produced news segments.
And:
World Audit.Org This last ranking is not as bad as the rest, but a 9 out of all countries is still nothing to brag about when you call yourself the worlds leading champion of democracy and a free press…
