The current administration is amazing. If they hear something that they don't like, they will jam their fingers in their ears so deeply that they touch at the tips in that big, hollow space. And if this fails to deaden the unpleasant noise, they will 'enhance' the information. They even place professional information enhancers in critical offices toward that end, notably one Philip Cooney -- liar extraordinaire. quote: Bush Aide Softened Greenhouse Gas Links to Global Warming By ANDREW C. REVKIN A White House official who once led the oil industry's fight against limits on greenhouse gases has repeatedly edited government climate reports in ways that play down links between such emissions and global warming, according to internal documents.
In handwritten notes on drafts of several reports issued in 2002 and 2003, the official, Philip A. Cooney, removed or adjusted descriptions of climate research that government scientists and their supervisors, including some senior Bush administration officials, had already approved. In many cases, the changes appeared in the final reports.
The dozens of changes, while sometimes as subtle as the insertion of the phrase "significant and fundamental" before the word "uncertainties," tend to produce an air of doubt about findings that most climate experts say are robust.
Mr. Cooney is chief of staff for the White House Council on Environmental Quality, the office that helps devise and promote administration policies on environmental issues.
I wonder if this Cooney chancre is another believer in some imminent apolcolyps, as was (is) James Watt of the Reagan years. Or merely another neo-con asshole trying to protect big industry's profits at any price.
But I do not wonder about his qualifactions in his appointed field; they are nonexistant. quote: Before going to the White House in 2001, he was the "climate team leader" and a lobbyist at the American Petroleum Institute, the largest trade group representing the interests of the oil industry. A lawyer with a bachelor's degree in economics, he has no scientific training.

I wonder how much influence industry groups are having over the changes. The June 2005 issue of Scientific America (p96) has an article on how these groups are fighting government regulation by high lighting scientific uncertainty. That they are essentially manufacturing uncertainty. It doesn't hurt that the current administration is very receptive to the needs of big business, too. |

Check this out, the very complete Bush environment record. NDRC Its so depressing I doubt you could stomach the whole thing in one sitting. |
