Since Satan really isn't in the bible that much doing bad stuff, in fact, I've never read satan doing any thing bad; and god is always doing the things we think satanist do...should the good religion be satanism?
Just asking, cause I just fininshed reading that whole freaky book, and I"m just amazed at how cruel god is and what a cameo role satan plays.

LOL. Wish I saw the post first. Then I could have come up with that.

Reasonable -- Bible mutually exclusive. Sorry, whenever religion is involved, reasonable is usually the first casualty.

I thought that Satan was the wacky next door neighbor character. He would go to the Soup Nazi with Jesie, Mary M. and Simon (first season, he was replaced by Pete in the final episodes) and he'd come up with these funny hair brained ideas, like the time he tried to talk Jesie into going to the top of the temple and jumping off. He thought, and this is a hoot, that Jesie wouldn't even bruise his heel. Laugh, thought I'd cry. Thrusday nights aren't the same since they were canceled. Satan never did get his own show...these spin offs never work.

So if reason gets killed first...what's left? Oh, I forgot, blind faith is left.

There is a really funny book called Job" A Comedy of Justice by Robert A. Heinlein that brings this up. Towards the end of the book, after the main characters get to heaven and have to ride at the back of the bus(angels in front), TheOverGod comes in and fires God for doing such a crappy job and gives the job to Satan who as it tuns out is not a bad guy and is just misunderstood. If anyone wants an easy read with some amusing jokes I can't recommend this book enough.

Also, check out "The Deathbird", a wonderfully thoughtful piece of fiction by Harlan Ellison, first published in 1973.

Thanks for ruining what I thought an original discovery. Alas, I read well when I'm in ruins.
I'll have faith in you two, that the books are good. However, if the books don't stand up to your claims, I'll have to start a topic about them.

Hey, I read a book called "Job" once. This one was about this guy called God who had a "good and faithful" servant named Job. So God turns over Job to the loving care of this fellow Satan in order to win a bet. He bets Satan that Job will remain faithful no matter what terrible stuff Satan does to him.
Pretty soon Job's entire family is dead, he has lost all his possessions, and is sitting in the wilderness dressed in sack cloth and covered with runny sores (Ouch! That Satan guy doesn't play around). A couple of his friends drop by to discuss his situation. One friend helpfully suggests that he must have committed some terrible sin to bring down God's wrath (the story doesn't actually call this "friend" Jerry Falwell - but maybe it should have). I don't recall what the other friends suggested.
In any event, it all turns out well in the end. Job remains faithful. God wins his bet (the story doesn't say what the stakes were) and gives Job a new family and lots of other goodies as a reward (sort of like a grouchy boss who yells and chews you out all the time and then gives you a raise to keep you from leaving the company).
Of course I'm not sure this particular book was supposed to be a comedy. It always struck me as kind of Kafkaesque.
