The grammer in today's poll of the day is....abysmal. May I suggest:

"What do you see as the single most important factor contributing to the attacks on the WTC and Pentagon?"

LOL, OK fair enough. I will fix it. Hey, I'm a web builder not an English major!
Thanks for the tip

I'm not an English major either, in fact 'D' was a very good grade for me however I do also abhor poor grammar. Thanks for pointing that out, Russ. I didn't notice but I don't think I would have said anything to @, he's a good guy and doing his best so I don't want to upset him.
Please do keep checking for those mistakes. Don't you just hate it when someone says 'I had went.'? My ears can't take that. Ewwww!

Oh yeah! That's a good one too. Shall we start a list?
BTW, Mr. Bush isn't helping, he should be setting an example. You'd think being married to a teacher.......
oh well, never mind!
I have a question, is it polite to correct someone when they are not using the proper grammar?
Today I called an office, the person who answered, the receptionist I assume, said the person I was asking for 'Hadn't CAME back from lunch yet.' Yikes!
I repeated, 'Oh, she hasn't COME back yet' but I doubt she understood.
This has been talked about before, someone said language changes. But I see this as part of the 'dumbing down' process. Should we just sit back and let it happen?

NO !

but it's probably not polite to correct grammar in conversation, except by the method that you used on the phone, Snake.

I usually just wince and try to move on.

Thank you. And ok, I guess you are saying do what's appropriate at the time.
I saw Judge Judy correct people. We should commend someone when they do that, maybe there will be a movement started and people will find out they are not alone in wanting to raise the level of intelligence.
I think if we let it pass, it will become more common and no one will know they are doing anything wrong.
OK, whatever!

This got way more attention than I expected! But since we're taking it into Pet Peves I'll chime in with mine. I HAAATE it when people mix up Then and Than. I see it on the Bad Astronomy BB frequently. "Suchandso was better then the other." "One event happend than another happened." Are we really loosing the difference between a comparative and a connective?! Chalk squeeking on a black board doesn't hold a candle to what that mix up does to me.

That's a good one too. I am aware of the difference and very much try to use the correct word. There is the occasional time when I make a mistake. If you should see any, I would appreciate having it pointed out.
Boy! When I started writing to my on line friend in England I was self conscious but I feel more so now, posting in this folder.
WOW, I figured out how to say that without using then or than.

one word. Spellcheckers.

Spellcheckers are to vocabulary what calculators are to simple math. :(

Unfortunately, if a word is spelled correctly but it's not the one you meant to use or it's not correct English, like 'to' and 'too', etc., then spell check won't help(make it right). At least some don't, are there ones that are so advance they correct EVERYTHING?
IMO, even if someone uses a calculator he should still have a fundamental (human)knowledge of what it's doing.

I swear I didn't plan that but that's a good example of what I was talking about.
I didn't add the 'd' in advanced but the word in itself is correct. Spell check wouldn't have caught it. Not on the program I have in my computer, anyway.

Ah, but Snake - a calculator does not calculate in the same way we humans do.

Snake, that's what I MEANT! They're making us lazy! :)

Heck, I can barely remember how to do long division without a calculator now. It's disgusting.
