Others that may become classics are Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles in the gothic terror, and Stephen King. I wish Marion Zimmer would account for a sci-fi classic, but that's just because I loved her...

My mouth dropped open when you mentioned the pope's criticisms because even though Benedict XVI was about the worst choice they could have made, I always have hope (because of the huge number of liberal Catholics and the liberal movement among first world Catholics that started in the 60's) that the Catholic church will eventually leave crazy-land and become a strong leader in a more sane Christian movement. Alas, it seems more and more the liberal Catholics just leave the church (perhaps they become Episcopalians? *grin*) and fundamentalism is on the rise.

So anyway, as far as I could tell from my brief poking around the Internet, Benedict's comments about Harry Potter seem to only be through a single source, a German writer who claims that's what he wrote in a letter. Blog from Austine Cline on the Pope's alleged criticism of Harry Potter: http://atheism.about.com/b/a/181901.htm?nl=1 From that, we can't assume he meant it to go public or to discourage the public from letting children read the book.

Anybody find any other statements from Benedict confirming this?
