Indeed, and from what we are gradually learning about extremophiles, it would seem that life could be likely rather than merely possible.
Thanks.

Just supposing that life did exist there for some time. I wonder if a more complete fossil record could exist showing evolution in a "better light". I guess we won't know until we put some warm bodies there. |

Dear god no! We could send 500 landers for the price of one manned mission. I think it is a huge mistake, which Bush is making. |

And this surprises you?
From 1969 to 1972, men landed on the moon. They found out it wasn't made of cheese and haven't been back since. <-- From a Wisconsin cheese commercial
People often dream of visiting other worlds. There are some things that humans do better than machines. Machines aren't as expensive as manned flights and give quality long term operation when programmed properly. |

The question is: can we get the knowledge required with 500 landers? I'm not sure at this point in time if automata is sophisticated enough to do that - maybe that is where the research money should go. Hopefully once they decommission the shuttle program those billions will be diverted to automata resarch. |

Our unmanned craft have made 95%+ of all the greatest discoveries so far, I dont see why not... All the telescopes, mars landers, outer planet searchers, sun study, surface mapping, chem anaylsys, spectra surveys and such. I cant think of much that humans can do that landers couldnt and would those few things be worth the effort? Most of the very short time the astronauts would have would be dedicated to novelty and not dying.
Its vanity and a shame, I was devestated when I learned about this plan. The biggest problem I have is the high failure potential vs cost. |

I went to France this July. Well, I didn't, really. I did send a camera, a tape recorder and an empty box. A week later I got the memory card back, with lots of great and interesting photos of la Tour Eiffel, Notre Dame, Arc de Triomphe and Montmartre. The box came back too, filled with a few grams of baguettes, crepes, cheese, champagne and wine. The tape recorder had sounds recorded from people saying things in French, as well as sounds of the city life of Paris. France looks like an interesting place. :-)
Seriously though, I don't get why we need to send only robotic probes or only humans. Why not both? We have scientists all over our own planet, to study life forms, mountains or other things. We have spread out over the planet for other reasons as well, which will happen in space too. |

True, but we'll need a better propulsion system to get us out there faster, and cheaper.
Once that's done, presumably we can then start to look to Mars or the Belt for mining purposes, and then also colonization...then maybe beyond.
It's better not to have all your eggs in one basket, after all. |

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.
