Great, we take shoes off at the airport to remind us to be afraid [terrorists and other criminals look for the element of surprise, so of course attacks on planes will no longer be popular...], and now Homeland Security is rounding up people who should be the responsibility of local police. And bin Laden, after being an used as an excuse for doing what they already planned to do, and the whole "dead or alive" business is forgotten.

And since the FBI has proven itself incompetent, thereby creating the need for a Department of Homeland Security, shouldn't the FBI be disbanded? I think I'm going to file a complaint with the Department of Redundancy Department.

Where I come from gangbangers has only one meaning and it is not "someone who is a member of a street gang". FYI

"...things I have neither seen nor experienced nor heard tell of from anybody else; things, what is more, that do not in fact exist and could not ever exist at all. So my readers must not believe a word I say." -Lucian on his book True History

"...They accept such things on faith alone, without any evidence. So if a fraudulent and cunning person who knows how to take advantage of a situation comes among them, he can make himself rich in a short time." -Lucian critical of early Christians c.166 AD From his book, De Morte Peregrini

Where I am, ganbanger is a synonym for gang member. Also, I was trying to make the headline fit the limited space.

I had the same problem. I know only one meaning of the word 'gangbanger', which confused me immensely when I first saw the title. As it is, I don't see a real problem in homeland security helping in the arrest of gang members. I would imagine that 'homeland security' entails more than singly handling terrorrism. I'm not sure how research methods are dealt with in America, but I could imagine that homeland security might have the authority to use methods that might not always be available to the local police.

Just as the dutch homeland security (AIVD, standing for general intelligence and information services) has a wider range of methods to their disposal as the police and is expected to do more than just be on the lookout for terrorrists.

I did notice however that this sweep seems targeted at latin gangs.
