Ok, I will admit that I am young and naive, so will someone PLEASE help me understand what MOOK decided that this was even semi-constitutional? Maybe it has been explained to me wrong. It is my understanding that under the Patriot Act, a person may be arrested for charges of "suspected terrorism" and be held in jail without trial until the "investigation" is complete? Is this true? And if it is, how in the WORLD did it slip by? It seems to me that it is a direct slap in the face of the 4th amendment, I believe?

Its true.
It slipped by in the hysteria and panic post 9/11.
Its a slap in the face to several aspects of the constitution.
It expires soon, but I'll bet you that the current legislature renews it. Why? Because it gives them power, and the rubes who vote for them are to stupid to comprehend the consequences.

Yes, it was passed in the post-9/11 obliviousness, by congressmen and congresswomen who, almost without exception, did not read it before voting yes.
But most of the main and nastiest parts were in the works before 9/11 happened.
It's enough to make a person paranoid. |

So exactly what can be done to render it extinct? I mean the obvious "write a letter to your congressman", but is there anything beyond that? |

Writing letters to politicians and letters to the editor of your local newspaper is more effective that you might think, especially if they are well written and concise. And the cool thing is that they always write you back. (Yes, usually a form response, but it's still neat to collect them.) But there is also joining groups like the ACLU if you want to financially defend civil rights. |
