Educationally and scientificly speaking, they don't have a leg to stand on, so naturally, they go to court in the hope that they can grow some pseudo legs. quote: Group files discrimination suit against UC
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A group representing religious schools in the state is suing the University of California admissions officials for allegedly discriminating against high schools that teach creationism and other conservative Christian viewpoints.
The Association of Christian Schools International, which represents more than 800 schools, filed a lawsuit Thursday in federal court claiming UC officials have refused to certify high school science courses that use textbooks challenging Darwin's theory of evolution.
The suit said the Calvary Chapel Christian School in Murrieta, a co-plaintiff, was told its courses were rejected because they use textbooks printed by two Christian publishers, Bob Jones University Press and A Beka Books.
Wendell E. Bird, an Atlanta attorney who represents the association, said UC policy is violating of the rights of students and religious schools. "A threat to one religion is a threat to all," he said.
UC spokeswoman Ravi Poorsina said she could not comment, because the university had not been served with the suit. Still, she said the university has a right to set course requirements.
One hopes that the court will give this suit, if indeed they are stupid enough to go through with it, the attention it deserves: none.
Edit: Elsewhere in the news: quote: Creation Scientist Challenges Intelligent Design Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005 Posted: 9:12:30AM EST
One of the world's leading experts in origin of life research issued a statement on Friday saying that intelligent design should not be taught in schools because it is not science.
Dr. Fazale Rana, vice president for science apologetics of the organization Reasons to Believe, said in his statement, “As currently formulated, Intelligent Design is not science. It is not falsifiable and makes no predictions about future scientific discoveries.”
Dr. Rana further commented on the idea of teaching intelligent design in schools.
“As a biochemist, I am opposed to introducing any idea into the educational process that is scientifically ludicrous,” said Dr. Rana. “Many proponents of Intelligent Design lose credibility, for instance, when they say that the Earth is thousands of years old when the scientific evidence and the fossil record clearly prove our Earth is at least 4.5 billion years.”

Too bad we don't have a legal system in which the loser is required to pay all expenses involved in a lawsuit. If that were the case, the Association of Christian Schools International would have to consider how much this might set them back if they lose. It would surely cost a substantial sum to cover their own legal fees, the court costs, and the legal fees incurred by the University of California.
As things stand, win or lose, the plaintiff doesn't have to pay the greater portion of what it really costs to process this kind of silly legal action. Since the investment is relatively small, even if they don't win the suits, organizations like this could initiate similar action against colleges and universities all across the nation. Imagine how much poor-oppressed-Christian mileage they could get from pursuing hundreds of such cases. And with our current method of handling the expenses involved in lawsuits, the taxpayers would foot the bulk of the bill for their frivolous whining.

Just another emotional appeal to lower the bar.

Yeah, but that's a threat to all religions. |

It's also a ripoff of "An injury to one is an injury to all".

Why do these shitbirds insist on dragging the rest of the world down to their moronic level? They've got their Bob Jones and Liberty Universities (and probably a bunch more bastions of higher miseducation I haven't heard of) to pass on their fantasies. Send your dumbass kids there! Let our PUBLIC universities to stick to reality (well, at least in the science curriculum). |

It does happen in some cases. I don't know how the decisions are made.
But until the courts are really making good case judgments instead of the best lawyer, aka the richest client, wins, then having the loser pay all costs may not be any better than not having them pay.
The system sucks all the way around.

It brings to mind the slightly paranoid thought that this is a cynically-planned attempt to 'test the waters,' so to speak. They've been working hard to get their young earth fantasies and ID into the public schools; are they now trying the same tactics in state colleges and this case will be the first of many?
It wouldn't suprise me -- the political climate seems right for it. And I have no doubt that they are well financed.
