| Yes, and Mobile (where I am) is going to get something too. I feel really bad for N'Orleans, but I am really glad that storm isn't heading for Mobile too....one man's blessing is another man's curse I guess. |

From the sound of the NOAA warnings, this one looks like they're expecting quite a lot of severe damage.quote:

HURRICANE KATRINA
A most powerful hurricane with unprecedented strength, rivaling the intensity of Hurricane Camille of 1969.
Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks, perhaps longer. At least one half of well constructed homes will have roof and wall failure. All gabled roofs will fail, leaving those homes severely damaged or destroyed.
The majority of industrial buildings will become non functional. Partial to complete wall and roof failure is expected. All wood framed low rising apartment buildings will be destroyed. Concrete block low rise apartments will sustain major damage, including some wall and roof failure.
High rise office and apartment buildings will sway dangerously, a few to the point of total collapse. All windows will blow out.
Airborne debris will be widespread, and may include heavy items such as household appliances and even light vehicles. Sport utility vehicles and light trucks will be moved. Power outages will last for weeks, as most power poles will be down and transformers destroyed. Water shortages will make human suffering incredible by modern standards.
The vast majority of native trees will be snapped or uprooted. Only the heartiest will remain standing, but be totally defoliated. Few crops will remain. Livestock left exposed to the winds will be killed.
An inland hurricane wind warning is issued when sustained winds near hurricane force, or frequent gusts at or above hurricane force, are certain within the next 12 to 24 hours.
Once tropical storm and hurricane force winds onset, do not venture outside!

New Orleans and the French Quarter - among my favorite places on Earth! (And I've been around.)  New Orleans folks will also have to go quite a ways to get to higher ground. This wonderful town is basically built at the bottom of a big bowl surrounded by water. I remember streets flooding just from a short rain.
I hope they get through this with just high winds and no storm surge though that seems unlikely, and this region is really set up to exacerbate the effects of a hurricane. Very scary. |

This afternoon I was chatting with a friend, a generally rational and intelligent person. But every now and then even the mostly sane ones come up with some silly surprises. We were talking about the potential damage of the hurricane and she was quick to say, "Oh yes, Edgar Cayce predicted it!" Then she posted a link to a website called Prophecy And Earth Changes.

My sentiments exactly. I can only hope that the city is prepared enough to prevent major loss of life. The rest can be rebuilt.

Yup, low pressure systems spin clockwise, high pressure anti-clockwise. We used to wait with baited breath for the cyclone season for the great swells to hit the Queensland coast.
Down south in Victoria where I live now, we also have huge low pressure systems, but due to the fact they form over the Southern Ocean they are not as intense as cyclones. They do however tend to last longer and provide good solid groundswells at Bells Beach and the rest of the southern coast. |
