The dollar estimates for damage caused by hurricane Katrina vary widely, but currently seem to be around $25 billion. The Iraq War costs the US taxpayers about $177 million per day. In five months George W. Bush will spend more of your money to terrorize and murder the citizens of Iraq than it would cost to cover all the losses incurred as a result of Katrina.

Driving in to work today I heard that in 2000 a government agency, (sorry I don't remember which one) came up with three imminent disasters that the U.S. was facing and should prepare for. The first was a major terrorist attack against New York, the second was a major hurricane resulting in the flooding of New Orleans, and the third was The Big One (Major Earthquake) hitting San Francisco. So far during Bush's tenure we are two for three. Let's hope we don't go three for three.

Here is an article about the funds for the levees being diverted to the war in Iraq.

Fred Phelps speaks out about the reason for the hurricane.

And what has Bush been doing while New Orleans floods? Why playing his Presidential gitar(sic).

On a final note I found this survivor comparison very interesting, take note of the wording in the captions.

I heard a snippet of The O'Reilly Factor while driving into work today. There was some guest host on--didn't catch his name--who was interviewing Ann Coulter about the hurricane. Specifically, their point was to hammer home how any attempt to "politicize" this tragedy (i.e. question whether Bush's policies in any way magnified the destruction) would backfire upon anyone who would dare stoop to such a level.

Coulter voiced her awe of Mother Nature and how no mere human could have been expected to mitigate this tragedy. Right as the interview was concluding, the host joked "So no matter what anyone says, people didn't cause this. We couldn't have avoided the hurricane by using less fossil fuels or anything." Coulter guffawed MUCH too loudly and for too long and actually repeated his words as if she was unable to get over how deliciously absurd the idea that Global Warming might have been a factor was. "Fossil fuels!" HA HA HA HA!!!

I listened to the show for maybe 30 seconds and before my anger forced me to turn it off. How do extremists like this have a radio program? Why is such blatant propoganda allowed to be pumped over the airwaves? How many Americans actually tune into this crap because they agree with the views expressed, or god forbid, because they think it really is "no spin" news? I feel like I'm living in some sort of nightmare.

When will a true leader step forward to save us from this insanity? The one we have is busy playing the fiddle guitar while Rome New Orleans burns drowns.

Hey all:

Got power back - everything ok - more later. Has anyone said that this was caused by the casinos or New Orleans lifestyle (you know - god's wrath). If anyone does, can they be banned, the sorry motherfuckers that they are?

Thanks....

Good deal. We were concerned about y'all Gulf Coasters. Still are, comes to that. This ain't over by a long chalk.

There are a couple of the usual suspects blathering in the media that God caused the strom because of the gays -- I linked one in a previous post, but that's about it.

It is probably a fair trade - hundreds (maybe thousands) dead, 20+ billion in damage, and an untold amount of suffering and stress to stop 'Southern Decadence'.

Way to go fundie god! You probably caused the tsunami and killed all those people to stop a beer tasting festival.

Fundie christians: I think maybe the two halves of their brains don't have enough interconnects.

Well, Bush has finally dragged his sorry ass back to the White House. Being as how everything he touches turns to shit, it might be better if he'd stayed on vacation, playing with his guitar and figuring out some way to blame Katrina on Clinton.

I'm now reading that dysentary is beginning to show up, as predicted, and there is no control over armed, well, might as well call them gangs. I have a nasty suspision that the worst is yet to come and it's not all that far off. Maleria, typhoid fever....? Dude & B'gal, et al, would know more about that than I, but they seem a possibility.

Rush " The Zit On My Bung Is Really My Head" Limbaugh is blaming the global warming "scare" on liberals. This guy needs a brain transplant -- does anyone know of a baboon that might be a vollenteer doner for the upgrade?

Odd, is it not, that we have yet to hear from Fred Phelps, or at least I haven't. Could it be that this was such a huge disaster that it gave him an orgasmic stroke? One hopes...

And here's the scarey part: This storm season is far from over and the water in the Carribian and the Gulf has not cooled a single degree.

What cracks me up....

The fundies fail to consider that this hurricane hit 4 RED states!

Its really god's punishment for the south betraying it's democrat history and voting for W!

Southern red states brought this on themselves by voting for republicans.

.... makes as much sense as god being pissed at homosexuals.

The mayor of New Orleans has ordered a complete and if necessary the forced evacuation of all citizens who are left. Frankly, looking at the pictures it is hard to imagine why anyone would want to stay. Anyhow this city has been declared completely uninhabitable. It's a dead city, at least for the next several months, possibly longer. The water is not going anywhere soon. That is roughly a half million people from New Orleans alone who are now jobless and homeless. And that is not counting the people who are suddenly refugees from the other areas hard hit. And while there is the Astrodome and many other emergency relief areas being set up, the scope of taking care of that many people, and returning them to some sort of normalcy has to be one of the most daunting tasks that our country has ever faced. Long-term mental health problems along with all of the medical problems are expected to become just one more of the many things that will have to be dealt with. The picture is a grim one.

Having been through a natural disaster myself I can tell you that it comes as no surprise to me that the relief wheels have been turning very slowly. It took from weeks to months for FEMA to actually start handing out relocation and repair checks in our area. That was the Northridge Earthquake. I was in Santa Monica, one of the hardest hit areas. And our area was fixable. I had to spend my own money to relocate. I was partially reimbursed. But the amount FEMA paid for that did not come close to what it cost me to do that. If I had not been able to come up with the money myself, I would have been screwed. In our case the Red Cross was almost useless. (At least for people in my situation.) That is not to say that they did nothing. I do believe that in cases like New Orleans there is much more that they can do. As weird as it is, the Salvation Army was in first and did the most on the front end of our little disaster. They provided the food, the money and grants to help those of us who were left homeless, no questions asked. I have my problems with that organization, but I have to admit that in the area of disaster relief of the immediate kind, they were there. I don't know what they are doing in New Orleans…

There will be plenty of finger pointing to do in the coming months. But right now I urge you to donate what you can for disaster relief. We will have a link on the site to do that as soon as @tomic gets it up and running. Until then you can donate here.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?
