Sir Isaac Newton's ideas are used by NASA and others to get things moving around in the Solar System (none having yet reached the Heliopause). Einstein made a correction on Newton but did not consider himself to replace Newton in all respects. I believe Einstein mentioned standing on the shoulders of Newton in a similar manner as Newton had talked of standing on the shoulders of giants. Newton is used in many other respects. Einstein's is more accurate, but nobody uses Einstein for navigation, because the mathematics is too complicated for that purpose. They use Newton for that.

The Earth and the Moon are falling around each other with the center of mass deep inside the Earth. The Earth and all of the bodies in the Solar System are falling around the Sun and the Sun is also falling around all of the bodies. However, the center of those orbits are deep within the Sun. This is the way gravity works. I did not make any of this up. And I did not get it from one of those silly anti-scientific sites. However, having known about this for such a long, long time, I have read it in numerous places and heard it in physics lectures. This falling of everything in the Solar System is due to gravity. It is the attraction of all of the particles in each body toward all of the particles in every other body. Everything is falling, but some are falling less and are therefore moving away in their orbits. And then, the Solar System is falling around the center of The Galaxy (the Milky Way). And The Galaxy (the Milky Way) is falling around the other galaxies in the Local Group. And so it goes. Of course, this is getting simplistic and there are many, many other things which affect the motions in the universe. Gravity is the weakest of the forces. A small magnet will lift metal things away from the Earth, overcoming the weak gravity of the Earth.

But to keep it very simple, the Earth and the Moon are indeed falling around each other but they are slowly falling less and less (three inches a year as Slater stated) and are moving away from each other in their falling.

It is much more complicated than that, and many body calculations are not yet mathematically possible.

Like I said "close enough for government work"

Magnetism is much, much, stronger than gravity. If you step out of a twentieth story window it will take you a considerable amount of time to reach the ground. But the magnetic bonding of the concrete molecules in the side walk will stop you in no time flat.

[Has this friend of yours any info on Apollonius of Tyana that (s)he could share with us?

According to the Oxford Classical Dictionary, Apollonias of Tyana was a neo-Pythagorean holy man. He lived in the 1st century AD and was a wandering teacher that pagan apologists compared to jesus. thats about as much as i could find out.
