It looks like some doc is trying to make a connection in the quoted section here.
Part the RR person quoted:
quote: In the chapter titled "Pederasty: An Integration of Cross-Cultural, Cross-Species, and Empirical Data," Bruce Rind Ph.D. lauds the rampant child molestation that reportedly occurred in those societies, at one point citing evolution as supporting a pro-pedophilia worldview. Writes Rind:
Pederasty, or sexual relations between men and adolescent boys, is condemned in our society as an unqualified evil that maims and destroys. In ancient Greece, samurai Japan, and numerous other cultures, pederasty was seen as the noblest of human relations, conducive if not essential to nurturing the adolescent's successful intellectual and physical maturation.
Current psychological and psychiatric theorizing have pronounced and promoted the former view, while ignoring the vast array of cross-cultural data related to the latter view. Mental health opinion has also ignored a wealth of cross-species data with important parallels. Instead, this opinion is based on feminist models of rape and incest, which are backed up by clinical research on child sexual abuse.
The name of the book is mentioned in the first post
Whether that's in context or not is anyone's guess, but you can imagine how they treat that statement. At least, it's plain that the greeks and romans, while having some good ideas that we integrated into our culture, obviously had stuff that was deservedly scrapped along with the lion feedings.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.
Another example of this guy's lunacy here. |

Hey Ig. Without supporting this individual. Pederasty was a practice that was socially accepted, not sure that I can accept the evolutionary aspect though. It was not hidden, shameful, or generally considered damaging. In many societies that practiced pederasty, it was actually detrimental to the boy if they were ignored. In one aboriginal culture, pederasty was considered to pass the strength of the man to the boy. That we don't accept the practice, it is treated as a criminal action and a violation of the individual contributes to the sense in our society that this is wrong and dangerous to the development of the individual.
Anyway, how much is based on the perceptions of the societies should be considered. We can not trully judge another society based on the norms in ours. These are subjective positions at best. If a child is raised by a society to expect that this strengthens him, then if he is ignored, he will suffer. Similarly, if a child is raised believing this is wrong and a violation, if he experiences this type of violation he will suffer. So, while we view it adversely, those societies did not.
Yet I must agree, that from my filters, this is a disgusting practice. Though, I'm not sure that I would base it being a disgusting practice on 'feminist models of rape and incest.' It would seem that is a personal statement of the individual who does/did not like the feminist movement. A violation of an individual is still a violation. I would say that our society that values, 'Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness' and individual freedoms has more to do with why this is a disturbing practice than feminism, which is so recent a development culturally speaking. That and the pressures put on the child to hide the violation by pedophile the transfer of blame from the pedophile to the child and the inability of the child to refuse to accept the responsibility for the actions of another. (I probably said that poorly.) |

Seems typical, to me. Ever since Darwin, people have attempted to use (or abuse) evolutionary science to defend practices such as eugenics or the so-called "social Darwinism." Pederasty would require a lot of support before becoming "acceptable" in most societies today, so if a connection - however tenuous - can be made between it and the bedrock science of biology, it can only be good (for the pederasts). And, of course, whether or not the evolutionary "model" of pederasty is correct is irrelevant to this socio-political goal.
And, ever since Darwin, the creationists point to these nutjobs who twist science to serve their own needs, and claim that eugenics or pederasty or whatever are the "logical offshoots" of evolution (thus evolution is inherently "evil"), making the creationists no more honest than the people whose "research" they point towards. Guaranteed that shortly, pederasty will be added to the standard list of the harms that evolution has "caused," which include (but are not limited to) drug use, bigamy, prostitution and (strangely) both communism and fascism (but nobody said creationists are consistent). |
