Fire Destoys Darwin Manuscripts

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) - Scientific books written by Charles Darwin were destroyed in a fire that gutted a building at Glasgow University, authorities said Thursday.
The blaze broke out Wednesday at the 100-year-old Bower building. No one was injured, and the cause remained under investigation, police said.
A collection of 19th-century botany volumes valued at nearly $3 million was destroyed. Among the lost manuscripts were works by Darwin, the scientist who developed the theory of evolution. It wasn't immediately clear exactly what works were destroyed.
Damage to the three-story building was estimated at $11.4 million.
