I disagree. He is a damned, incompent dick and ignorant of the job function of his department.
It's not FEMA's job to rescue people. What a load of shit. |

I'm not sure the Feds could do a worse job if they made an intentional effort.quote: Brown Says He Should Have Asked Aid Sooner...
Former FEMA director Michael Brown said Monday he should have sought help faster from the Pentagon after Hurricane Katrina hit, and accused state and local officials of constant infighting during the crisis, according to congressional aides.

In case you didn't hear, here's how some of your tax dollars are being spent by FEMA as part of the continued gross mismanagement in resolving the Hurricane Katrina situation...quote: $236 Million Cruise Ship Deal Criticized...
On Sept. 1, as tens of thousands of desperate Louisianans packed the New Orleans Superdome and convention center, the Federal Emergency Management Agency pleaded with the U.S. Military Sealift Command: The government needed 10,000 berths on full-service cruise ships, FEMA said, and it needed the deal done by noon the next day.
The hasty appeal yielded one of the most controversial contracts of the Hurricane Katrina relief operation, a $236 million agreement with Carnival Cruise Lines for three ships that now bob more than half empty in the Mississippi River and Mobile Bay. The six-month contract -- staunchly defended by Carnival but castigated by politicians from both parties -- has come to exemplify the cost of haste that followed Katrina's strike and FEMA's lack of preparation.
To critics, the price is exorbitant. If the ships were at capacity, with 7,116 evacuees, for six months, the price per evacuee would total $1,275 a week, according to calculations by aides to Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.). A seven-day western Caribbean cruise out of Galveston can be had for $599 a person -- and that would include entertainment and the cost of actually making the ship move.

Michael Brown is merely a reflection of this entire administration in microcosm. Here's the timeline for Katrina: quote: KATRINA TIMELINE Comment on the timeline here.
Friday, August 26 GOV. KATHLEEN BLANCO DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY IN LOUISIANA [Office of the Governor]
GULF COAST STATES REQUEST TROOP ASSISTANCE FROM PENTAGON: At a 9/1 press conference, Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré, commander, Joint Task Force Katrina, said that the Gulf States began the process of requesting additional forces on Friday, 8/26. [DOD]
Saturday, August 27 GOV. HALEY BARBOUR DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY IN MISSISSIPPI [Office of the Governor]
5AM CDT — KATRINA UPGRADED TO CATEGORY 3 HURRICANE [CNN]
GOV. BLANCO ASKS BUSH TO DECLARE FEDERAL STATE OF EMERGENCY IN LOUISIANA: “I have determined that this incident is of such severity and magnitude that effective response is beyond the capabilities of the State and affected local governments, and that supplementary Federal assistance is necessary to save lives, protect property, public health, and safety, or to lessen or avert the threat of a disaster.” [Office of the Governor]
FEDERAL EMERGENCY DECLARED, DHS AND FEMA GIVEN FULL AUTHORITY TO RESPOND TO KATRINA: “Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency.” [White House]
Sunday, August 28 2AM CDT – KATRINA UPGRADED TO CATEGORY 4 HURRICANE [CNN]
7AM CDT – KATRINA UPGRADED TO CATEGORY 5 HURRICANE [CNN]
MORNING — LOUISIANA NEWSPAPER SIGNALS LEVEES MAY GIVE: “Forecasters Fear Levees Won't Hold Katrina”: “Forecasters feared Sunday afternoon that storm driven waters will lap over the New Orleans levees when monster Hurricane Katrina pushes past the Crescent City tomorrow.” [Lafayette Daily Advertiser]
9:30 AM CDT — MAYOR NAGIN ISSUES FIRST EVER MANDATORY EVACUATION OF NEW ORLEANS: “We're facing the storm most of us have feared,” said Nagin. “This is going to be an unprecedented event.” [Times-Picayune]
AFTERNOON — BUSH, BROWN, CHERTOFF WARNED OF LEVEE FAILURE BY NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER DIRECTOR: Dr. Max Mayfield, director of the National Hurricane Center: “‘We were briefing them way before landfall. … It's not like this was a surprise. We had in the advisories that the levee could be topped.'” [Times-Picayune; St. Petersburg Times]
4PM CDT – NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ISSUES SPECIAL HURRICANE WARNING: In the event of a category 4 or 5 hit, “Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks, perhaps longer. … At least one-half of well-constructed homes will have roof and wall failure. All gabled roofs will fail, leaving those homes severely damaged or destroyed. … Power outages will last for weeks. … Water shortages will make human suffering incredible by modern standards.” [National Weather Service]
And it continues on showing such eneptitude that one'd think it was some sort of novel written by a catastrophy author or a script writer for the Three Stooges.
What has suprised me was that Bush was stupid enough to bring the shithead back as a FEMA consultant. I mean, I know the our fearless leader, whom no one sapient would willingly follow, is running on only 10% of his brain, but...really!
I think this latest Brown appointment is just might come back to haunt the administration.

If Brown were President and Bush was running FEMA there would have been no difference, except the Republicans would be ousting Bush as an incompetent and standing behind and/or making excuses for "President Brown". My point is that both are dumb and incompetent. Rove, old conservative money and the big corporations would still be running (ruining) the country.
But it is good to see the curtain lifted a bit on the present regime, exposing the greed, cronyism and corruption that Brown, Delay and Frist are involved with.

Dick though he may be, his talking point lies are being used by the faithful to cling to their beliefs that the party in power is no more incompetent nor corrupt than the party out of power.
Gawwd I can't believe the Bush supporters I know still insisting that they voted for the right guy. I haven't found any of them that will face the facts that are right in their faces. |

Yes, that attitude seems to pop up among some Bush supporters, though FEMA was much more efficient when Clinton was in office. On the other hand, Brown is just too much of an incompetent to avoid harsh criticism even by Senate Republicans.
What's weird is when this attitude pops up among Democrats or other potential voters during elections. This brings the following to mind:
The idea that "Democrats are no better than Republicans" became more prevalent on college campuses and was soon after launched in the general population during the Gore vs. Bush campaign. It surfaced again in the Kerry vs. Bush campaign leading up to the election. Perhaps it fuels itself well with older voters via the Democratic mishandling of Viet Nam followed by Nixon's insane approach.
It is carried on Doug Thompson, who's recent Capital Hill Blue essay, though outwardly critical of Bush, is more heavily interior laced with anti-Clinton, Gore, Kerry rhetoric.
It is highly likely and almost certain by implication that this idea, which by hindsight strangely sprang up suddenly before the previous two elections, comes from Karl Rove. Of course there are bad (and good) Democrats, but it is a Rove/Bush tactic not to simply exploit weaknesses as other politicians do. They gather votes, foster tacit support (and eliminate potential votes to their opponents,) by creating and exploiting apathy and enhancing disillusionment among younger voters.
The attitude they despise, and want to eradicate is: "I know the other party is not perfect but at least they'll get the country moving again." Or: "…at least they'll provide jobs…or avoid war…or actually find Ben Laden"…etc.
The Democrats have some grave faults – like not reaching people. The Bush administration is actually indifferent to the average person, wants to maintain fear and loves voter apathy, yet through much co-opting of "values" and "patriotism" and "9/11" they appeal to brainless voters and disillusion and cancel the more intelligent voter. It is just one small trick in their campaign arsenal.
It is ironic to still run into liberals who blindly think that the Democrats (or any other party that opposes the NeoCon Republicans – including moderate Republicans,) are no better and will behave the same way if in power. They have been unknowingly influenced by Karl Rove. If they refuse to believe it, they are at least behaving the way Karl Rove would prefer they behave. Staying at home, disillusioned, and not voting for a Democrat. Or voting for Bush because they think his government is no different from the Democrats and he'll make the country safer. This is baloney.
The simple fact is that if liberals and moderate conservatives said "What the hell…" and voted Democratic in the next election, (and despite DeBold the Democrats won,) they would still have much more opportunity to have a say in government over the indifferent aristocracy we presently have.
