Every now and then something like this shows up in the papers, or even more often nowadays, on the web. This guy thinks we need to prepare a plan to establish diplomatic relations with the extraterrestrials. Part of his angle is his belief that George W. Bush plans to build military outposts on the moon as a defense against incoming space invaders. I guess everyone needs a hobby.
quote:
Former Canadian Minister of Defence Asks Canadian Parliament to Hold Hearings on Relations with Alien "ET" Civilizations...

On September 25, 2005, in a startling speech at the University of Toronto that caught the attention of mainstream newspapers and magazines, Paul Hellyer, Canada's Defence Minister from 1963-67 under Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Prime Minister Lester Pearson, publicly stated: "UFOs, are as real as the airplanes that fly over your head."

[...]

Hellyer warned, "The United States military are preparing weapons which could be used against the aliens, and they could get us into an intergalactic war without us ever having any warning. He stated, "The Bush administration has finally agreed to let the military build a forward base on the moon, which will put them in a better position to keep track of the goings and comings of the visitors from space, and to shoot at them, if they so decide."

Hellyer's speech ended with a standing ovation. He said, "The time has come to lift the veil of secrecy, and let the truth emerge, so there can be a real and informed debate, about one of the most important problems facing our planet today."

That anyone can think that an intergalactic alien invasion could be "one of the most important problems facing our planet today" just floors me, considering how many problems we have which are actually quantifiable.

Let's see, defense minister in 63, he would have had to have been at least 30, you'd think, and more likely older. That's 42 years ago so that makes him plenty old enough to be senile.

Since he got an ovation, he must have been speaking to an audience of senile folks, too.

The scary thing is that UFOs are real. There are hundreds if not thousands of unidentified objects zooming about in the solarsystem. And radar "gremlins" have been around since the second world war at least.

Problem is that all UFOs are unidentified, and the nuts don't realise it.

And in the extremely unlikely event that "space aliens" actually have covertly visited us, aliens capable of interstellar or even intergalactic flight at (presumably) superluminal speeds, shooting at them is probably the most stupid (given the technological gap) and pointless (again, the technological gap) thing we could possibly do.

But then I'm guessing that most of the readers of this community are already aware of that. With certain... shall we say "prominent" exceptions.

And what exactly would be the advantage of a base on the moon instead of the earth?

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Well, it's probably easier to lob big rocks at the earth from the moon, rather than at the moon from the earth.

The atmosphere on Earth will reduce the power of any laser by absorption.

It would appear that the gentleman's statements have brought out the out-patients.

This could be fun to watch.

From the article:
quote:
Hellyer said he is concerned the United States is preparing weapons for use against the aliens and could get the whole world into an "intergalactic war".

Shouldn't he be a bit more concerned about:
"Hellyer said he is concerned the United States is preparing weapons for use against the muslims and could get the whole world into an 'religious war'".

Good call- it makes too much sense not to be part of the plan, but I still say a low-gravity lunar golf course is what's really "driving" this... consider the overwhelming scientific evidence:

1. Republican President golf aficianados (Eisenhower, Ford, etc.)
2. Iraq war won't drive R&D, production, economy as prior wars- need new "cold war" with aliens, lunar sporting facility provides ideal "stealth" cover as viewed by invading extraterrestrials.
3. Miracle 20th century invention of "Astro-Turf" was obviously named with celestial sporting ultimately in mind.
4. Job creation, tourism promotion, and advancement of logistic technologies, reinvigoration of aerospace and airline industries.
5. Will enable renegotiation of NAFTA, all trade agreements, etc. as new lunar and interplanetary provisions will need to be included.

That's just what I was going to say.
Also, if they are unidentified, how does anyone know there are aliens 'in' them?
