Found this at the Rude Pundit's place. As might be expected, nay: anticipated, he has a few rude words and phrases on the topic.

Bannin' Books, Kansas-Style:
You need a larf in these tragic times? You need a little political sorbet to cleanse the mental palate as the mindboggling parade of scandals, from Duke Cunningham to more Rove to whatever the fuck is going on with Iraq, starts to get to ya? Then click on over to the website for the Overland Park, Kansas group, "Citizens for Literary Standards in Schools," and get ready to double over, 'cause it's a motherfuckin' blast.

See, the group of parents, which calls itself, it seems, "CLaSS," (or, more, properly, "classKC") wants to bring "decency" back to the required reading materials for students in the Blue Valley district. The coolest part of the site? Why, CLaSS provides a list of offending passages from each of the books it wants banned. No more do the students, hands grimy and unwashed after masturbation, have to underline and giggle at the bad words. CLaSS has done the works for them. Wanna know where the narrator talks about her vagina in Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings? CLaSS helpfully provides it.

Yes Toto, you're still in Kansas.....

I was fortunate when I spent my brief tenure in school. My mother cared little what I read as long as I was reading. But along with the violent, fleshy horrors of Mickey Spillane and other mystery writers, I formed and enhanced a life-long fascination with wildlife. I read a great deal of Mark Twain and Ambrose Bierce as well as Roger Conant, and other herpetolgists. I became well aquainted with E. Ross Allen through his essays and eventually came to know him personally. I read a lot of western fiction, especally the Gold Medal paperbacks.

I think I might have read perhaps two of the Hardy Boys drivelers, so popular with my peers.

I did my daughters the same favor, and they are voracious readers, and the younger has taken to writing....

If a book is a piece of shit, it will not recieve much serious attention and will deservedly die of neglect. Censoring it should be a capital offense!

Read no evil?

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Such as spelling Dr. Seuss?
