Man I love this story even if its not true, the black squirrels in my neighborhood are evil I swear. They will look right at you and make weird screaming noises, creepy.
quote: Squirrels have bitten to death a stray dog which was barking at them in a Russian park, local media report.... ...A pine cone shortage may have led the squirrels to seek other food sources, although scientists are sceptical.... ...A "big" stray dog was nosing about the trees and barking at squirrels hiding in branches overhead when a number of them suddenly descended and attacked, reports say. "They literally gutted the dog," local journalist Anastasia Trubitsina told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper.

Heh, passed on by Pravda, eh? They've become pretty much the eastern European version of the Weekly World News. Take anything they print with a shovel-full of salt.
Howsomever, most if not all rodents will happily consume a bit of meat -- if you don't have a reliable house 'possum, a scrap of bacon makes a good bait in a mouse trap. And some few rodents are almost wholly carnivorous. The grasshopper mouse of the western US, for example.
Also, it is rare to find bones or antlers in the woods. Reason: porcupines, mice, squirrles, voles, and so forth soon chew them up.
Interesting subject for a bullshit story. And have no fear, squirrls are your friends -- they are very flavorful in a brunswick stew...

Can you imagine if Hitchcock had used squirrels instead of birds in his movie? Do you reckon that some of the suspense would have disappeared if he had?........ The squirrels... they're cooperating... They are going to attack... Here they come!!!!! AAAAAHHHH! Gnaw, gnaw!! AAAAHHHHH!! Gnaw. It doesn't work really, does it?
BTW: I've heard of rabbits attacking knights (and it must be true, because I saw it on TV). |

Let us not take rabbits lightly -- they can be extraordinarly dangerous. Why one time a killer bunny almost savaged a President of the United States! quote: It began late one afternoon in the spring of 1979. The President was sitting with a few of us on the Truman Balcony. He had recently returned from a visit to Plains, and we were talking about homefolks and how the quail were nesting and similar matters of international import. Suddenly, for no apparent reason -- he was drinking lemonade, as I recall -- the President volunteered the information that while fishing in a pond on his farm he had sighted a large animal swimming toward him. Upon closer inspection, the animal turned out to be a rabbit. Not one of your cutesy, Easter Bunny-type rabbits, but one of those big splay-footed things that we called swamp rabbits when I was growing up.
The animal was clearly in distress, or perhaps berserk. The President confessed to having had limited experience with enraged rabbits. He was unable to reach a definite conclusion about its state of mind. What was obvious, however, was that this large, wet animal, making strange hissing noises and gnashing its teeth, was intent upon climbing into the Presidential boat.
The President then evidently shooed the critter away from his boat with a paddle. The scene was captured on film by a White House photographer.
Carter escaped with his life, as we know, and went on to be savaged by a senile thespian....

My dogs would eat all the squirrels they could catch. But the pesky little rodents know that the dogs can't reach the top of the fence.
Of course there's always yersinia pestis to worry about whilst hunting squirrels.
And then there was that "mad squirrel" disease scare in Kentucky a while back.
I had a neighbor that was from Kentucky. I found a frozen squirrel in his freezer, fur and all. I guess he was saving it for a special dinner. |

Once upon a time, during 3rd year microbiology, I probably managed by accident to isolate this little beastie from a sample of soil . Talk about getting more than you bargained for. Geez! (Oh, and I'm not talking about squirrels here) |

Anyone who has ever been bitten by a squirrel, or any largish rodent, can imagine it quite well, thank you. They can drive those long incisors through thumbnail, bone and all like a 16d sinker through soft pine. And it hurts. A lot! In fact, it is one of my more vivid, childhood memories -- a big fox squirrel I'd shot and like a fool, picked up before making sure it was dead.
I have not repeated that mistake....

Are you sure you didn't isolate Yersinia enterocolitica rather than Yersinia pestis? Enterocolitica might be in soil since it is carried and spread via deer and other animal feces. Pestis mainly resides in animal blood and fleas that consume the blood. |

Could very well have been. I used a commercial biochemical kit for identification, and Y. pestis was the most probable bacterium present. I do seem to remember, though, that the probability was not too high (<10%). |
