And now there is this:
Echizen kurage quote: TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) -- A slimy jellyfish weighing as much as a sumo wrestler has Japan's fishing industry in the grip of its poisonous tentacles.
Vast numbers of Echizen kurage, or Nomura's jellyfish, have appeared around Japan's coast since July, clogging and ripping fishing nets and forcing fishermen to spend hours hacking them apart before bringing home their reduced catches.
Representatives of fishing communities around the country gathered in Tokyo on Thursday, hoping to thrash out solutions to a pest that has spread from the Japan Sea to the Pacific coast.
Sooo...., can we now look forward to the epic Godzilla meets Nomura's jellyfish in dazzling B&W on the big screen?
Probably not, although I'd pay to see it.
Evidently these jellies are somewhat cyclic in that they occasionally show up in increasing numbers and then gradually fade away. A current conjecture is that warming seas has triggered this latest outbreak.

Vast numbers of slimy jellyfish; hmm....sounds like perfect students for the fundies to teach/instruct Intelligent Design, unimpeded.

quote: From Reuters story -- "...South Korean fishermen have been suffering similar woes, but China, where giant jellyfish are a delicacy often served dried and dressed with sesame oil, does not seem to have registered the outbreak as a major problem, Japanese officials said.
Seaside communities in Japan have tried to capitalize on the menace by developing novel jellyfish dishes from tofu to ice cream, but for some reason the recipes have failed to take off..."
Now is the time to strike a deal with the fishing fleets and open "Jelly Burger" drive-through locations from coast to coast!

Well, there is already a movie called 'Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster' Been a while but I think the premise was that the Earth is getting too polluted and I think the monster looked like that jelly fish but more scary.

Neat site, in a tabloidie sort of way. I even recognized some of the articles -- this one f'instance:
quote: 3-Headed Frog Found Frog Also Has 6 Legs
POSTED: 1:20 pm EST March 5, 2004 UPDATED: 9:30 pm EST March 5, 2004
Wildlife experts in Britain are stunned by the apparent discovery of a frog with three croaking heads and six legs, Local 6 News reported Friday night.
The frog was reportedly found at a children's day nursery in the English village of Weston Super-Mare in Somerset, according to the report.
The staff at the Green Umbrella nursery first thought it was three frogs huddled together but after closer inspection they realized the frogs were joined together.
A wildlife biologist said a reason for the three-headed frog's development could have been damage to the embryo, according to a report.
Watch Local 6 News for more on this story.
Of course, the frog freak turned out to be a breeding cluster involving 1 female and 2 males. Anyone who has ever kept a toad pool going has seen similar many times.
I've bookmarked this'n. Thanks!
Say Chip, did you get your samurai crab pic? It's in the last gasp of Bigbtain's Last Stand.

For me, fish has to be real fresh to have a good taste without a lot of spices and sauce... only once in a while do I get it that way. Some of the frozen's better than any of that canned stuff, but the closest to fresh I've had was a whole salmon I got as a gift this Christmas that had been preserved with irradiation and sealed (no refrigeration required, and it was pretty damn good!) But I don't know there's any spice or sauce known to Man I could use on that f'n jellyfish that could keep me from barfing it up! (no suitable icon, but this one's the same color my face would be anyway.)
BTW great underwater shot- cool pic. |

Jellies are some of the world's most lovely and graceful animals. Here's a pic of my all-time least favorite:
Sea wasp
As for eating them, well, I 'spect it's pretty much like anything else: depends upon how hungry you are. Or if you don't know exactly what your host is serving nor why he is smirking like that.

If you've ever eaten Thai or Chinese food, well.....those people eat anything. YUK! And they think it's good! So it's a matter of what you've grown up with and are used to. LOL, my room mate even tells me to leave the kitchen when he's cooking (Thai/Chinese), he says....'You don't want to see this.' And you ( who are reading this) don't want to know what it is, trust me! |
