Why do people cry mystery when a mere bit of research will tell all? Doesn't it make more sense to look first than to untimatly look like an idiot?

filthy,

When I first saw the picture I thought it would be about pareidolia and that someone had claimed it was the face of the Virgin Mary on the back of the critter.

Any one else see an image that looks like one of those china dolls you see on the Antiques Road Show on PBS.

Interesting critter nonetheless.

I thought the same thing! When I first saw the picture I figured it was going to be another story like the fish with a human face.

Hadn't thought to look for a face -- there is kinda/sorta something there, yes. The Daily Express News could be missing out on the biggest scoop since Jesus appeared in a yellow snowbank.

Now, if they could find stigmata on it, or make it weep red salad oil.....

Edit: Here's a little confirmation on Piece o' Cake I:
quote:
Last week, The Bracker and Little Caymanian invited readers to try to identify a strange looking sea creature that washed up on the shores of Cayman Brac two weeks ago, where it was found by local fisherman Layman Scott.

Brac Marine Enforcement Officer Erbin Tibbetts said that, unfortunately, by the time he learned of the fish, it was too decomposed to send to Grand Cayman for exact identification.

However, Croy McCoy, a research scientist at the Department of Environment, told Cayman Net News that, based on the description and photos provided, he believes the fish is a member of the Family Macrouridae (Coryphaenoididae), better known as grenadiers or rattails.

These are found from Arctic to Antarctic, and there are thirty genera, with a total of 260 species. Mr McCoy added that most species are bathypelagic, occur in tropical to sub-tropical latitudes and live at depths between 200-2000 meters

"Heike Crab" -- A crab found off the coast of Japan that has a carapace resembling a Samurai! The crab evolved to look this way due to years of fishermen tossing them back if they looked too human. Quite remarkable.

Hey Chip, that's the pic I posted in bigbrain's thread, that I shamelessly hijacked. Glad you finally got to see it.

I found it odd that a decent photo of this interesting animal was all but impossible to find on any site except one having a series of photos taken by a tourist. The crustation guys are getting pretty slack...

Yup. It seems to be the best photo around, even if using Google-Images. I also found this interesting history quoted from Carl Sagan's "Cosmos":

Yet another example of sloppy journalism on the subject of nature or science. I like the part in the Daily Express, where the discoverer of the mud lobster takes it to his first "expert":
quote:
We showed the pictures of it to a certified diver who shook his head and said: "I have no idea."

This exotic creature obviously should have been shown to a certified mud diving specialist, not a regular diver.

Yup. Pretty much what might be expected from the press in these benighted times.

Hell, they should have shown it to anyone willing to look it up. It took me about 10 minutes to get verification on what I already knew. I've read about mud lobsters, but it was a long time ago and I couldn't remember the name of it. I kept thinking "slipper lobster" which is rather distantly related, and a different animal altogether. The biggest part of my search was getting the name (the very obvious name, dumbass!) right.

Kind of a cute, little mudbug, ain't he?

Exactly!

I recently bought a bird feeder, which I filled with sunflower seed. Almost immediately upon setting it up, I was seeing strange birds that appeared very exotic, even cryptozoological, to my eyes. But I did not assume they were all really "nondescripts." Within a few minutes, I'd gone to the National Wildlife Federation's eNature.com Web site, and had identified each species. Like the journalist, I'm not a scientist, but I managed.

More "strange critter" news from Malaysia, this one about scientists on the hunt for Bigfoot:

Naw, it is, after all, a lobster and related to those with the rubberband claws. I would expect it to taste rather like it's Maine cousin.

Bigfeets and bird feeders -- the former a tall tale with excellent potential for vicious practical jokes, and the latter a fluttering pain in the ass.

I make my feeders out of small, galvanized trash cans (available at Lowes for about 12 bucks) with a bolted-on, plywood base and painted camoflage. They ain't pretty but they hold about 17 # of black oil sunflower seeds each. The thought behind these big feeders was that, holding so much feed, I'd not have to tend them all that often. Yeah, right!

325 # of seed through 3 feeders last year. Going on 125 # already this year and the boat-tailed grackles haven't arrived yet -- the little fuckers are living better than I am! And there's sunflower seed hulls and birdshit everywhere!

I declare, I don't know why I do it, year in and year out like some mindless, bipedal metronome. I rationalize it by thinking that one day I might have to eat them, and they'll be better fat than lean.

And yes, I am an idiot 'cause here I sit getting ready to build yet a forth feeder to attract yet more avian, high-velocity digestive systems, with attached cloacas, to further befoul my front steps and drive the cat insane with futile blood-lust.

Lots of goldfinchs and redpolls this year as well as junkos......

Man, I know what you mean! Not only do I have to observe the most sociopathic behavior in the repertoire of my avian guests, twice I've found a pair of rats (I hadn't even know we had 'em here) climbing all over the feeder. I finally got the feeder located where the rats can't seem to get to it, but there are still "... sunflower hulls and birdshit everywhere," indeed. And I may be setting myself up for a potential infection of bird flu, once it gets here to California.

I'd supposed that operating an avian soup kitchen would provide hours of relaxing pleasure. But the birds feed and fight in such a frenzy that some have slammed into my patio doors during their battles. (A few years back, I'd similarly thought that setting an aquarium would provide a healthy, low-blood-pressure past time. Wrong then, too. The little scaly monsters were always eating pieces off one another, or dying horribly from diseases I could not control.)

I've taken a break from feeding the feathered little bastards (mainly sparrow species, house finches, and a few American goldfinches). I want them to clear up the fallen seed that still is uneaten, and I want to discourage the rats.
