I suppose this is where I just have a different philosophical/ethical outlook on things. To me, there is a power of social influence in being able to buy advertising space on which one plasters logos and copyrighted phrases. I think that power - which can be bought - should have the consequence of people using those images in and phrases in art - for both criticism and simply artistic discourse. Because we are constantly bombarded by commercial images, they are part of our culture and I think that should give people the right to use them, with the one exception being when use causes confusion with the actual product.
I understand there are those who disagree with me. I understand your reasons for disagreeing with me. Apparently our values simply differ. |
