Many of the current administrations have been very disturbing to both left and right thinking people. We keep hearing rhetoric about a "war being fought" and that's used as a justification to eliminate freedoms and grab power that I thought our constitution had set aside for congress. Just how does the President get to declare a war all by his lonesome and let loose his cronies to finish off what the terrorists didn't destroy?

I think more people need to wake up and send word to their congressman and to the President that this has to stop. We can't even be sure that there will be any results from from these extreme measures. We should be looking critically at each and every one of them and not just toss out a 90% approval rating to an administration that hasn't done anything particularly wonderful since September 11th. personally, I think almost anyone else would have done better. Some of the words coming out of this administration have bothered me since day 1. Couldn't Al Gore just take over after 2 years? Seems fair enough to me. He'd have a hell of a job rebuilding America, though.
I thought these jokers pledged to uphold the constitution? I see the opposite.

Our government has often criticized other governments for trials by military tribunals upon civilians, "secret" evidence, and (at least to our way of thinking prior to 9/11) illegal surveillance. Now let's get into a huge pipe dream here. I'll wait while everyone refills........ Let's say, now that we're in the mood for it, that we are successful in our quest to wipe out terrorists. There's no more need for draconian measures right? The folks employed for this can be given a small pension and sent merrily on their way. Unemployment is no problem because our economy is so..okay nevermind. What we'll need is a new enemy! A group that is a danger to the American Way! Who shall that be? Anyone want to share a cell with me? Lisa

I feel like this is a big "I told ya so" back when Ashcroft was nominated to be the Attorney General. Can you say big fat liar?

A big "I told ya so" to who? As I recall the members of this board reacted with a collective shudder. Lisa

Nothing like a little fear to make people abandon fundamental principals of constitutional democracy in favor of knee jerk reactionism. Let's all be good little patriots and trade our liberty for "security". Then all we'll have to fear is fear itself...and the government.
Guess I'm going to have to write my representatives and let them know not all Americans approve of this kind of idiocy.

I didn't mean it that way at all. I'm sorry if I gave that impression. I meant it in a general sort of way and was not directed towards anyone on this board.

We have the same problem over here in the UK. Tony Blair sent in our troops without holding a debate in Parliament. The new The Anti-Terrorism, Crime and Security Bill will erode even more freedoms in this country but will serve to do nothing to stop terorism because the measures that might or would help would be deemed illegal under European Law, thanks to the integration of the European Convention on Human Rights by the Human Rights Act of 1999.
Here is an article on todays (26th Nov) Daily Telegraph

The chickens are coming home to roost for the idiot Blair.
By the way, there has been a lot of press coverage over the fact that he cannot spell 'tomorrow' (he spells it 'toomorrow')
