So, what is everyone planning on Darwin's 197th birthday. I'm planning on watching Daytona qualifying and relaxing.

I'll be going to a class on antibiotic resistance. That's certainly appropriate. |

The challenge was made last Monday, so I will be firing an impromptu belly-gun match with a few friends (2 of them county mounties), during which, I shall cheat shamelessly. There is money involved; a modest sum, true, but money never the less.
They will be firing standard ammunition, 9 mm mostly, and I have just finished hand-loading 50 rounds of puffers for my .38 spl wheelgun. It will be 5 seconds for 5 rounds, so low recoil and a fast recovery time between shots is of paramount importance.
Afterward, at the traditional after-match visit to the gin mill, I'll take my winnings and buy a round in honor of Darwin.

I might go to a Darwin Day celebration at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. They are having 15 minute lectures and showing a film. Plus it's a really really cool museum. But things start at 1PM, I tend to sleep in, and parking is a bitch. So I'd say it is a 50/50 chance.
I can't wait until I have kids and I'm actually motivated to really get out and do these kinds of community activities. |

I intend to combine the firearms fun of filthy, with marfknox's more social plan. I'll take my assault-rigged Mossberg Model 500 with 00-buck loads, go to a local church, and declare the building to henceforth be "The Temple of Reason and Evolution."
No, I guess I'll just sleep in, 100% chance.

Oy veh! A Mossy 500! I want one, even though I am a mediocer shotgunner at best. I think it's because they look so ferocious. And they hold all of those lovely shells.
Alas, it will be a while before I can afford such a thing, and even then, I will probably blow the roll on a pistol, ever my firearm of choice. I'm wishfully dreaming about a Clark built, 1911, .45 ACP.
Go with #1 buck. The weight of metal is about the same, but you have double the pellets.
And have a fine Darwin's day!

Maybe I'll go to church. With any luck there will be a good sermon. |

"Mediocre shotgunner"? Who needs skill with a scattergun? Mine's pimped out to an admittedly ridiculous degree. It already had a shortened barrel, though of still legal length. I replaced the wood furniture with a fold-up plastic stock, and the pump with a forward grip. Then I added one of those bright flashlights to the barrel. Since I had a cheap laser sight that wouldn't work on my Kel-Tec 9 mm, I put that on the barrel, too. Pretty silly, having a laser on a shotgun, but it might add extra intimidation, and was fun to add. I also added a plastic holder that holds five extra 12-gauge cartridges on the folding stock.
I got both that and the Kel-Tec because I was living alone for several years in a rural area of Washington State, where sheriff's response normally required a minimum of twenty minutes, and often longer. People there were pretty much expected to take care of their own defense until help could arrive. There was a high crime rate, especially burglary, with many meth users about. There were also black bears, one of which got into my yard and was chased by my Chihuahua, and by me lighting it up with the shotgun's flashlight while hollering and trying to restrain my dog. (The bear was a huge boar. It got away with no shotgun or Chihuahua-mauling injuries.) I had a concealed carry permit for the Kel-Tec, also, and normally went "packing" when going out.
Now, I'm in CA, in a very peaceful area. My stroke makes it hard for me to work the slide on that auto. It would be almost impossible to obtain a concealed carry permit for a pistol here, anyway.
I agree about the #1 buck, but I found that out after I'd already stocked up on #00. And I don't get a chance to use up the ammo I already have.
I would love to have a .45 ACP. My Dad used to have a Model 1911, WWII vintage. I got the Kel-Tec because it was cheap and had what I felt was sufficient stopping power. In all the times I took it to the range to shoot it, it never misfired.
My favorite firearm, though, is my matchlock musket. Firing a "coalburner" is more fun than any other weapon, IMO. Love the smell of sulfurous clouds of smoke in the morning!
Good luck in your belly-gun competition, filthy. And a fine Darwin's day to you, too, and to all!

I can't believe the DI has a message about Darwin Day. We use religion to defend Darwin? That's news to me. Very interesting RW. |

Not us skeptics, I'm sure. I think this must be a case of some churches choosing to defend science and education, perhaps to deliberately counter and make up for what fundy churches are doing. Sure beats 'em doing the opposite.

I think the stress of pushing ID creationism as non-religious while actually having a religious agenda is getting to them. Why are they so honked-off that some preachers may support evolution? Maybe they don't like real science playing in their sandbox? Hard to tell what's going on inside their (pin)heads. |

I like it. It's like the effect of the D-Day invasion on the Russsians war effort: A second front. And on this one, their coreligionists are taking them on. Anthing that drives the DI to further distracion is agood thing.
They're having to start to feel a bit isolated now. This, after recent signs that one or more of them at the DI are considering giving up a "scientific" argument against "change over time."

quote: “This isn't science versus religion, it's science versus science,” added West. “It's a standard part of science to raise evidence critical of an existing scientific theory or paradigm. That's what good science is about—analyzing evidence and asking tough questions. Scientists have a duty to raise critical questions about existing scientific theories.”
Okay.....
You gots emperical evidence that disproves the ToE, then bring it on, chump. We've been waiting to see such for a century and a half, and thus far all there's been from your side of the actually nonexistant question is blather, outright lies, and wishful dreaming.
And as for the hundreds (so many! But out of how many in the world?) of scientists that you claim are in your stable; exactly how many are there, who are they and what are their fields of research? And how many are named 'Steve?'
Belly-gun match: old age and treachery have triumphed yet again! Will those guys shooting the big bore, pocket-sized, automatics ever learn that 5 secnds goes by fast, too fast to waste time recovering from the recoil of factory pistol fuel? I certainly hope not.
I spent my winnings ($30) buying rounds and snacks in celebration of the greater influnce of Darwin, the demise of ID, and my own perfidie de glorius....
