Funny, zandore! Thanks!
My take on Mad Cow Disease, by the way:
It is righteous divine punishment visited upon nonbelievers by Lord Shiva, God of Cattle and Destruction.

It's not quite that simplistic. And he's not really god of cattle.

Ricky commented:quote: That video was utterly ridiculous.
Yes, udderly.
Snake claimed: quote: It's not quite that simplistic. And he's not really god of cattle.
Not quite that simplistic, indeed. But it is that gods-awful complicated, as is typical of the labyrinthine Hindu theology. Shiva looks a lot like a god of cattle to me.
From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiva): quote: The Vedic [Shiva] was frequently invoked as the lord of nourishment, to bestow food, wealth and other blessings. With the divine Soma, he was called the progenitor of heaven and earth, and is connected with the marriage ceremony, where he is asked to lead the bride to the bridegroom and make her prosperous (Skt: Civatama). Additionally, he has the epithet Bapardin, as has Rudra and the later [Shiva], and is called Par Upa, or guardian of cattle, whence the latter derives his name Parupati.
[My bold. The name "Shiva" was displayed on Wikipedia using an alphabet that did not display properly this site.]
From YetiZone, which I never expected to cite here! (http://www.yetizone.com/hinduism.htm): quote: Shiva is the god of destruction and the lord of cattle.
[My bold.]
From Holy Mountain (http://www.holymtn.com/gods/shiva.htm): quote: God of the cosmic dance; member of the superme Hindu triad, along with Brahma and Vishnu, Shiva is a complex god with many conflicting attributes and names. He is Lingodbhava, the phallic deity, Rudra, lord of beasts; Pashupa, protector of cattle; Bhutapati, father of demons; Tryambaka, accompanied by three mother goddesses; Digambara, "clothed in space" or "sky-clad"; and Nataraja, king of the dance.
[My bold.]
From Gods and Goddesses of the World (http://www.scns.com/earthen/other/seanachaidh/godindia.html): quote: Shiva Other Names: Siva, Mahakala, Lingodbhava, Rudra, Pashupa, Bhutapati, Tryambaka, Digambara, Nataraja, Natesa, Shiva Ardhanari. Description: Member of the Hindu triad with Brahma and Vishnu. Merciful fertility god who is also an ascetic who practices yoga. Always represents great power. Rules Over: Fertility, physical love, destruction, strength, medicine, storms, warriors, long life, healing, magick, weapons, cattle, rivers, fire, death, dance, rhythm, meditation, war, righteousness, judgment.
[Bold by me.]
As an admitted non-Hindu scholar, I picked many Google hits that I'm unqualified to evaluate fully, but that Shiva guy does look to me a lot like a "god of cattle," among his many other aspects.

I think that is a bit misleading. I was trying to be helpful and more accurate. Whatever you looked up may have some useful information but it's not anywhere complete. The cow thing is not the main characteristic of Shiva nor did he originate directly from Hindu but was kind of a transition from the pre Hindu civilization. Kind of like Easter and the Christians I guess, haha. Not that you want to know more, even if you did take the time to look it up, but I suggest you read about the Maurya dynasty and the Aryans (culture and civilization). I got much of my info from 'Indian Art: A Concise History' by Roy C. Craven. Anyway, that's enough of that, take it or leave it. It is fascinating though, for anyone who likes anthropology. |
