Do Quakers have their own communities, or did you mean Mennonites?
I assume they have communities since they refer to themselves as communities, but I really don't know much about them. Perhaps they no longer live as they did in the past. |

I'm not really up to speed on this, but I think that the Quakers refer to themselves as a spiritual community rather than a physical one. And I've read that the Mennonites make the Amish look downright frivolous.
The Amish are grudgingly getting -- "modern" is not the word I'm looking for but it'll have to do. When I was driving truck, I'd sometimes deliver lumber to Amish truss mills in PA. They have no qualms whatever about running their business' with electricity. Further, many of them, those who work in the mills anyway, now drive cars. These heaps are the oldest, sorriest, pieces of automotive shit available. I was talking to another driver delivering at an Amish mill, and he told me that few and probably none had a driver's license. Can't vouch for the fact of that, but it does not seem unlikely.
I recall reading, a couple years back, of an Amish drug ring getting busted; I don't recall the outcome. It seems that a couple of them had a deal with outsiders for supply and were selling to the brethren. Whether they like it or not, today's culture is catching up with them.
Something I've wondered about a little: During my ten years of military service, when the draft was in effect, I never met nor even heard of an Amish serviceman. I would think that CO status would be relatively easy for them to attain, but I wonder if they even bothered to register for it. Sometime I think that they have a sort of endangered species status in the states where they are numerous. Which of course, they are.
I have at last forgiven the Quakers for Richard Nixon...

I say let them have there little, inbred, "likely that everyone will die in the event of a viral outbreak" town. Hell, we spend a lot of money doing basically the same thing with criminals, why not let these nuts do it to themselves. |
