Although this isn't as interesting as Filthy's Lesbian Lizards, I thought you might be interested to hear about a new species of rodent discovered in Laos last year is a member of a 40 million year old family which was previously though to have become extinct 11 million years ago - a rodent coelacanth

I read about that a little while back. Then, at one of our off-the-cuff pistol matches, I ragged a churchy friend (OEC & ID supporter) into stating that there were no important, mammalian species to be discovered, only subspecies and minor ones at that. When I offered to put up a little cash on it, he retracted the statement instantly.
I need some fresh meat -- they've all come to know me too well.
I dislike the term "living fossil," and the breathless excitement surrounding it. There are just so many of them! Speaking time-line wise, the only differences between a horseshoe crab and this rat is that the crab's lineage is a lot older and that we've always known about it.
I'm looking forward to reading of it's status in it's natural habitat as well as the behavior of captive specimens. It should be very interesting, as rodents are an important part of the diets of virtually all small and some not-so-small predators. The little guy has been around a long time under some tough conditions.

How to disguise a hyperlink:
Start with the forum tag hyperlink by clicking the Globe-icon. This produces the url forum tag:
Then you need to add ="" to that tag
After that you insert the link (in blue) between the quote-signs and the text (in red) between the start- and end- url-tag: Read the article

Yes, the horseshoe crab has remained essentially unchanged ro much longer and the first Amoeba is still alive. Actually there a lot of large gaps in the fossil record - we only notice them when there is a living animal at the other end of the gap.

So far they have only turned up dead in the Laotion markets. Unfortunately, the two legged predators might finish them off completely. |

Yeah, but we could at least learn what they taste like... I would think that they would go well in brunswick stew.

Ha! I know my first response upon seeing a living Apatosaurus would be awe. My second would probably be to wonder what the thing's ribs tasted like with a little BBQ sauce...

Clever boy. You stuck silent italics code in there to prevent the url code from activating. I had tried and failed to use

to get the same effect. Now I know a new trick. |
