Just because they can't stop spending...
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/03/16/congress.debt.ap/index.html
quote:
The debt limit will increase by $781 billion. It's the fourth such move -- increasing the debt limit by a total of $3 trillion -- since Bush took office five years ago.
I didn't relise that it had gotten so big. Does Bush and crew know how to budget?

Seems quite proud of the fact that he doesn't do much reading, and apparently doesn't do much listening either considering who labeled such fiscal irresponsibility "Voodoo Economics". Of course that could have been just campaign rhetoric.
Also I keep forgetting, he seeks input from a higher father for big decisions. The voices in his head. |

Seems that I recall, from sometime in the 80's, a phrase widely used by republicans... "tax and spend democrats".
In the face of these new "borrow and spend republicans" the old "tax & spend dems" don't seem nearly so bad.
This is, literally, insane.
The republicans refuse to eliminate any pork from the budget, refuse to work towards smaller and more fiscally responsible government... despite the fact that they won the legislative majority in the 90's based in part on beating up the dems for wanting to spend to many US tax dollars.
Instead, they cut taxes, increase spending more than any democrat admin ever did (even FDR), and just decide to put it on the credit card.
Makes you wonder how many of them truly believe the end times are comming.

I think most people do not realize that when the government is running a deficit, tax cuts are illusory since the foregone taxes are simply added to national debt.
I read somewhere that only 2% of Americans support doing what is required - cutting spending and increasing taxes.
It is also interesting in the light of the Dubai Ports controversy to consider that China holds a lot of US Government debt.
Think about this - the invasion of Iraq is financed entirely by borrowed money.
In Canada although the Federal Deficit was initially an issue raised by the right, it was a Liberal government that eliminated the deficit and began to whittle away at the 500 billion dollar national debt. Now that we have the George Bush fan club in power here it looks like we are going back to boondoggle spending and tax cuts. Provincial governments of every stripe from NDP (social democrat) to Conservative have managed to balance their budgets.
I cannot understand why the Federal Deficit has not become an issue in America.

We're fucked. quote: Senate's Budget Plan Omits Bush Medicare Cuts, Adds Spending March 17 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Senate approved a 2007 budget plan that rejects President George W. Bush's calls to trim Medicare spending, while it boosts federal spending by at least $11 billion more than the administration's request.
The chamber voted 51-49 last night to approve a budget blueprint of about $2.8 trillion that also allows oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The plan omitted procedural protections needed to enact any controversial tax-cut legislation.
``This is a responsible budget,'' said Senator Judd Gregg, a New Hampshire Republican who heads the Budget Committee. ``It's not everything I wanted, obviously. But it's a step in the right direction.''
Nearly all Democrats opposed the plan, many saying it would do little to tame the nation's persistent deficits.
``Borrow and spend, that's what this budget represents,'' said Senator Kent Conrad, the top-ranked Democrat on the Budget Committee. ``A vote for this budget is a vote for more debt, higher interest rates, a weaker economy.''
Five Republicans voted against the plan; one Democrat voted for it.
It is my sincere hope that our impacted-bowel of a Congress gets a long overdue, seismic enema this coming November.
And upon reflection (edit), the White house gets a mega-dose of penicillin soon after, to cure the collection of pustulant chancres in there.

$9 TRILLION DOLLARS..,
Thats just too large a number for me wee noodle. Let's see, that would be enough for 28 Eiffel towers made out of pure gold, roughly four times Britain's GDP, it would equate to $1,500 for every man, woman, and child in the World today, or a national debt of $30,000.00 for each man, woman, and child in the country... Funny, the till seems to always be empty when it comes to education, or health care, wasteful stuff like that, but never for one more republican war of some sort. Wars declared by those, who refuse to soldier in them, too. Just another cost of one party rule, the wrong party apparently... |
