The latest from factcheck.org:
quote:
A GOP radio ad accuses Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin of proposing to censure President Bush "for pursuing suspected members of al Qaeda," which isn't true. Feingold has stated he supports wiretapping suspected terrorists. His measure would censure Bush for ordering wiretaps on US soil without a court warrant, for failing to notify all members of the Senate and House intelligence committees, and for "efforts to mislead the American people" about the legality of the program.
Read the full analysis here: http://www.factcheck.org/article381.html

Today on NPR they were comparing this to Andrew Jackson's censure (the only other presidential censure in US history), and how that backfired by causing the Democratic minority to rally around Jackson like they hadn't before. They were talking about the possibility of Republicans rallying around Bush more strongly if the censure went through. However, two things stand in the way of history repeating: The Wigs attacking Jackson were the majority, which the Dems today are not. And second, The Wigs suceeded in censuring Jackson, while Feingold probably won't. So it seems this was probably a wise move on the part of Feingold, what with Bush's approval rating lower than ever.

Just a brief comment on your user profile marfknox. That is one big cat.

I'm in overload now. Political spin machines have very little to do with the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth so help you FSM. There is a big reliance on the average Joe and Jane to equate sound bites with being well informed. And it works.

As long as Joe and Jane buys that bullshit, the American people will have the president they deserve.

Edited to add:
Skeptic? Me? After the 2004 election I've grown into a blooming cynic regarding American politics. I'm so glad I live in Europe.

Naw, just the camera playing tricks. Both of the cats on me in that picture weigh a mere 11 pounds.

Ok, 11 pounds is about right for an adult cat. I have a 19 pounder at home and your picture made them appear close to the same size.
