I just received the latest version of eSkeptic (a little eNewsletter put out by the Skeptics Society). In it there is an advertisement for Wife Swap - the tv show, looking for a skeptic family to partake in their program.
I'm actually somewhat concerned that someone might think this is an excellent way of getting positive exposure for skepticism without being fully aware of the way the program behaves. Unfortunately, eSkeptic offers people who might consider going on this program no other references except for a direct link to the program's producers.
The following quote is attributed to the Wife Swap producer: "A skeptic can take many forms and I think they could bring a new outlook to an otherwise closed minded family." Sounds innocent, doesn't it?
Fortunately, we have a reference from someone who has very real experience with the program. The Infidel Guy.

I took the time (it's a long Webcast!) to listen to the whole program about Infidel Guy and his wife's experiences with Wife Swap. It's terrible how badly the show was edited, to deliberately distort nearly everything about how that couple and their family thinks and behaves. Hate mail and veiled death threats that they are now receiving are largely the fault of these distortions. The Infidel Guy Webcast on the subject itself is well worth listening to.

I'd go for the $50 grand. Who cares about being exploited for that much money? You know they are looking to embarrass people given past shows. But I'd bet the skeptic isn't as likely to be fooled as the non-skeptic they choose to exchange with. |

Oh, $50 grand? I hadn't caught that part. Well, that makes it a horse of another color. I could withstand a lot of humiliation for $50 k. I've done it often enough for free, after all.

I'm not sure where the number $50 grand came from. The eSkeptic report lists $20 grand. Still, it's a significant chunk of change, although it should be noted that IG claims to not have benefitted monetarily overall. Of course, even at 20 or 50 grand, it's your family you're talking about.
My primary concern was that it would be inappropriate for anyone to enter into it without having some background to make the decision on and to prepare themselves with. An informed decision to take part is one thing....

$50 grand is the amount of money, the [screaming at the top of your lungs in a shrill voice] "They're not Christian" "They're dark, dark I tell you." [/screaming at the top of your lungs in a shrill voice] swapped wife on one show claimed she wouldn't take but later accepted. That was the most hilarious thing I've ever seen on TV. |

B, the hysterical psychological child abuser screamed that they were "darksided", not merely dark.

Among other hysterical things.
I did feel sorry for the kids in that house. Stephen King might get another version of Carrie out of it. |
