CNN has this AP article:

Officials: Ship probably killed rare whale

Thursday, April 20, 2006; Posted: 12:27 p.m. EDT (16:27 GMT)

BALTIMORE, Maryland (AP) -- A cargo ship probably struck and killed an endangered whale and then dragged it, a state wildlife official said.

The 35-foot (10.5-meter) long, 17,000-pound (7,650-kilogram) male sei whale was found Monday, wrapped around the bow of the 800-foot (240-meter) container ship MSC Johannesburg.

The whale had broken bones and internal injuries, indicating it was killed by the ship, which sailed from Boston to Baltimore this week, said Cindy Driscoll, director of fish and wildlife health programs at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

Sei whales are an endangered species. They usually travel in deep areas of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and they are not typically found in Maryland's part of the Chesapeake Bay.
[My emphasis.]

You know, I think the "officials" are probably right in their bold guess. Either that, or the sei whale died of misadventure while trying to mate with the ship, or attempting to kill it by strangulation.

The "officials" and journalists involved are probably (there's that word again ) more capable than that statement reflects. Blame their legal departments.

Bingo! Sadly, people cannot often tell the plain truth that is is front of them, due to legal concerns. But if I am ever found fifty miles from my home with my head and shoulders lodged into the radiator of an eighteen-wheeler, I just hope that the coroner's report doesn't state that I was "probably" killed by being struck by a truck.
