It's not that big a deal. I get that you feel like you've been unjustly treated. You're just overreacting a bit. I do the same thing sometimes. |

Gorgo, some people are complete idiots. Some people are idiots when it comes certain subjects. (I'm stupid when it comes to math). You, however, have expressed the opinion that it is wrong to ever point this out, since it only "proves they hate themselves" or some other such nonsense. You couple that sanctimonious with your passive-aggressive comments about religion and the motives of other posters (and then your subsequent refusals to acknowledge that you ever meant your comments disparagingly), well, then people tend to get tired of it pretty quick.
Are you not aware of how you come across are are you just past giving a shit? You claim to be deeply upset at the plight of the less fortunate in this world, but lately you sound like nothing so much as a total misanthrope, hating everyone. Maybe you've descended from skepticism to cynicism.

Gorgo, I have heard you say that people have feelings of lacking in self worth as a motivation for using a phrase like “whack-job.” I have heard you say people who have god beliefs are lacking in self worth outside of this thread.
Granted that you are not a physician and you have stated in this thread that this is just your observation. I have observations too. One of them was a discussion you had with Valiant Dancer. For some reason, it seemed to be less okay to you for him to call anyone a “whack-job” because he has a divinity belief. I read that to mean one must be a “whack-job” to have a religious belief even if you yourself would never ever put it that way.
I did read what the Rabbi said and frankly, I think he is full of crap. That said, let me ask you straight out. Do you believe that those who have a God belief all suffer from a lack of self worth?

No. Dave plays games. I used to think he was serious, but he just plays mind games. That's all. I doubt he's said anything serious in his life. What a hoot. Don't take it seriously. |

I think that if it floats his boat to call someone a whack job, that's his business. What he is doing, and I know this because of observation of what I do, and what others do, is building himself up by putting other people down. We all do it. We all have beliefs about our self-worth which cause that. If you think you don't, well, good for you, but I haven't found anyone who doesn't have those issues to some degree. Maybe some less than others, maybe me more than others. Calling someone a "whack job" helps no one. We all do that kind of thing, and I'm not singling him out, but again, religion makes that kind of thinking sacred. I try not to make it sacred. Did I take a pot shot at Val to build myself up? Probably. Is that something that I encourage? Of course not. I do try to learn from it, and not say "he deserved it."
Since people who believe in god are a sub-set of all people, then I'd say that they probably have these beliefs in a lack of self-worth. Again, just from my observation and my questioning of people. Nothing scientific has ever been implied, and I think you are amazingly incorrect to say it was ever implied. Do I think my mind is without flaws? No. I have not said that, have been careful to say the opposite, and I don't understand the tendency of people here to read anything else into what I've said.
Now. Is it clear to me, again from past observations and the statement that the Rabbi made that he feels it's necessary, because he thinks life isn't worth very much, that he has to make a fantasy life in order to give his worthless self some value? Of course. Are religious people the only ones to do that? No. Does everyone do that? Of course. Religion makes such thinking sacred. That is why it's dangerous. Is non-religious people's thinking just as dangerous? That may be. Or it may be that my observations are just nonsense. |

Well, if you think that people are idiots, and that you are an idiot in certain subjects, then why don't you think you're an idiot when I constantly say one thing, and you think it means another? Maybe it's you that are unable to think from point A to point B? Maybe you're stuck in a particular mindset and can't see your way out of it? Or again, maybe you're right. Maybe I am "Passive-Agressive" (no armchair psychoanalysis there). Or maybe I'm trying to say something that's just difficult for me to say in an attempt to learn something, and you see it as angry and cynical because you've trained yourself to jump to conclusions and see certain signs as angry and cynical.
Or maybe you're all just the angry, arrogant windbags you appear to be, and I'm wasting my fucking time with you all. |

Your welcome, so how about you laying off the insults for now. I gaurantee that they aren't making your argument any more compelling. |

So, here's the question I have. Would folks here consider Gellman a moderate or a fundie or an extremist or what? |

I wouldn't say he's a fundy. I think he's just more a run of the mill gasbag.

In all seriousness, I no longer have a clue about what it is you think you don't understand. About anything. I once thought I had a handle on where you were coming from on a variety of subjects, but I now know that I was completely wrong. I hereby apologize to you for presuming that I had a grasp on any point you may or may not have been trying to make for the four years or so that I've been reading your posts. Furthermore, I apologize to you, Gorgo, for acting upon my ignorance of your intended meaning by replying to you as if I understood you. I am sorry. |

I would agree. He doesn't seem extremist, just totally ignorant about atheists. He thinks he has some profound understanding worthy of his Newsweek column. But he is mistaken. Unfortunately, no one but atheists will probably notice. |

Wow! I can't believe I'm agreeing with a Jew. I think he's right. Of course there are all kinds of atheists just like in any group and maybe I just talk with the ones who are most angry but I've found it to be so. Especially the intolerant part. At my fathers funeral I tried to talk to the rabbi about there being no god but he brushed me off. They are such snobs. |
