Friends and I attended the "Impeachment Forum" at the Crest Theater in Sacramento. The Crest is Sacramento's remaining old movie palace and seats 900. This forum came at the conclusion of the California State Democratic Convention. We didn't except a large crowd, and we were surprised to find the theater filled to capacity. Late-comers were turned away as letting them in would violate fire department codes. The crowd, made up of all walks of life: old folks, college kids, black, white, democrats, was vocal and there were often cheers and standing ovations.
The panel included Representative Maxine Waters, who gave a realistic view of the problems faced with introducing an impeachment resolution in Congress. This prompted several shouts of "Get a spine!" directed not at Waters, who was popular with the crowd, but at the Democrats in Congress. Nevertheless, despite the Republican majority, momentum for impeachment is growing and Speaker of the House, Dennis Hastert will be seeing more and more resolutions coming his way. Illinois has one as does Vermont.
Another panelist, California Assemblyman Paul Koretz has just introduced impeachment legislation in the CA State Assembly (AJR39). http://www.impeachbush.tv/news/koretz_060424.html
For the record, the panelists were: Joye Swan - Progressive Caucus of the Democratic Party. Tim Goodrich - Iraq Veterans Against the War. Elizabeth de la Vega - former federal prosecutor, (how defrauding Congress about Iraq, torturing prisoners, and wiretapping are all completely impeachable offenses.) Bob Fertik - President of Democrats.com and co-founder of afterdowningstreet.org. (He outlined Section 603 of Jefferson Manual by which impeachment is initiated by state legislatures.) (Note: Ellen Tenney will personally submit an impeachment resolution from Vermont to the Speaker Hastert, on today, May 1st. Maxine Waters, on the House Judiciary Committee. Paul Koretz - California Assemblyman. Shayana Kadidal - Staff attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights and co-author of "Articles of Impeachment Against George W. Bush" - http://www.impeachbush.tv/books/ccr_articles.html Mike Malloy of Air America Radio was the moderator.

I applaud the effort, which I do think needs to be made, but so long as the Neocon Republicans control Congress, the Slow Wheel of Impeachment will spin in place with no possible traction.

Amen. http://www.cato.org/view_ddispatch.php?viewdate=20060501
quote: "President Bush has quietly claimed the authority to disobey more than 750 laws enacted since he took office, asserting that he has the power to set aside any statute passed by Congress when it conflicts with his interpretation of the Constitution," according to The Boston Globe.
