Clearly, if the reports are at all accurate, the Haditha killings were a deliberate massacre of non-combatant civilians, done in "hot blood" in revenge for the killing of a Marine via an IED bomb. The actions of the Marines seem to be criminal and outrageous, however justifiable their rage itself was. A hasty and flawed coverup by NCO's and officers then apparently ensued.

The kind of racist conditioning of Marines which marfknox mentions has to be terminated with extreme prejudice, and replaced with a careful indoctrination on the Laws of War, and the democratic societal priniciples for which Marines are presumably fighting. Marines do need to be tough bastards, but they cannot be mad dogs.

These Marines, by all accounts, are fully responsible for their own actions on the ground. But the blame for allowing a climate which permitted the Haditha atrocity goes right to the top, the President and the Seceretary of Defense. They should be held to account, too!

[Edited to add:] I know I'm not contributing anything original here, but I felt I should, especially as a Vietnam vet, weigh in on a subject of such importance.
