In a charming effort to garner attention for his forgotten little dot of a country, to remind the world that France is still a colonialist power to be reckoned with, and to put his linguistic isolate of a nation on the world map, France's President Jacques Chirac has mandated the creation of a France-and-its-colonies-only rival to Google Earth.
[Backstory note: France is a rarely-noticed nation in the western part of Europe, largely forgotten since the time of Napoleon, except for use by German armies and Lance Armstrong for victory parades, and as an exotic background venue in Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code.]
France has also been in a snit of late, having failed to garner serious attention from major world terrorist groups, falling far behind the USA, England and even Spain in this important index of international recognition. It is apparently hoped that the higher resolution imaging on Géoportail (a French word, meaning "tail-end of the world") will aid terrorists in selecting and targeting impressive Gallic landmarks.
While the Géoportail Web site doesn't seem to actually work as of this writing, President Chirac has already made his point pour la France.
